Build quality

  • One owner reported a poor binding paint job on their Custom Shop model, indicating potential quality control issues in certain batches.

    Source
  • Modern Standards (2020-present) have reverted to traditional wiring with no PCB and no weight relief, which some players prefer.

  • Some owners report neck and fret issues, including dead sustain and intonation problems developing over time in their 2009 Les Paul models.

    Source
  • It's been noted that some finishes, especially where the player's arm rests, wear off quickly on certain 2009 models.

    Source
  • A noticeable grain change in the wood finish is mentioned, especially in the lower quarter of the body, which might not meet expectations for a $9k guitar.

Comparisons

  • The Custom Shop R9 is perceived by some to be three times better than a standard Les Paul, though opinions on this vary.

    Source
  • A 2008 VOS chambered LP Standard is praised for both its aesthetics and playability, being described as one of the best by an owner.

    Source
  • Some owners prefer investing in a Brazilian rosewood fretboard R9 or a Murphy Lab aged model for similar budgets, citing better aesthetics and rarity.

    Source

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Swapping the bridge pickup in a standard model can enhance its sound, with some owners preferring this approach over stock pickups.

    Source

    Source
  • Adding Seymour Duncan Alnico II pickups is recommended for achieving the classic Slash tone without purchasing a signature model.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Despite some negative perceptions, guitars from 2008-2012 often maintain high resale value if priced competitively and showcased for potential buyers.

    Source
  • Many argue that Custom Shop quality does not justify the $9k price tag, suggesting similar models available for $3k offer comparable performance.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners who acquired Gibson guitars during clearance sales, such as a 2012 SG, report satisfaction due to the value of bundled accessories like padded gig bags.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • For those prioritizing aesthetics, a highly figured top with a lightweight body is recommended over a plain top for high-end Les Pauls.

Channel your inner Slash

I don't play this thing very often, as I got it mainly as a collectors item. However, there are very few things more satisfying than picking the intro to Sweet Child O' Mine on an exact replica of one of Slash's guitars.
