  • Power button placement on the front panel can lead to accidental shutdowns

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Behringer Poly D.

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners frequently need to adjust tuning pots on the back to maintain sound accuracy.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users note that Behringer synths, including the Poly D, are generally not available in local stores, requiring purchases through major online retailers like Sweetwater or Amazon.

    Source
  • Some owners report that Behringer support is unhelpful, emphasizing the importance of purchasing from a reliable retailer.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Poly D's analog design and absence of presets are recommended for users interested in hands-on sound exploration rather than live jamming.

    Source
  • The lack of built-in reverb or delay means additional effects units are recommended to avoid a dry sound.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Arturia Minifreak is mentioned as an alternative for those wanting presets and complex sound options, while still being approachable for beginners.

    Source
  • The Model D, although lacking certain features like a sequencer and arpeggiator, is highlighted as a more modular-friendly option and less than half the price of the Poly D.

    Source
  • Owners suggest the Korg Minilogue as a potentially more reliable alternative due to modern features and price.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The synth's knob-per-function design is highlighted as beneficial for learning synthesis, providing immediate sound response without menu diving.

    Source
  • The built-in distortion is described as useful, but not as impressive as the chorus, which is highly praised.

    Source
  • The Poly D lacks presets; users must create and document sound patches manually, which is crucial for beginners to note.

    Source
  • The synth is paraphonic, not polyphonic, affecting how chords and arpeggios sound due to differing oscillator pitches.

    Source

Build quality

  • The Poly D is praised for its "big fat sounds" that provide instant satisfaction, especially for beginners exploring synthesis.

    Source
  • The internal sequencer is functional but described as awkward, requiring patience to operate effectively.

    Source
  • While the knobs and wood-metal construction are solid, the keybed is noted as the weakest component, described as creaky.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The Roland SE-02 is recommended for those seeking similar architecture to the Poly D but with potentially better build quality.

    Source
  • Used Monologue synths, suggested as alternatives, are available for around $200, making them a cost-effective option.

Critic Reviews

Sonic LAB: Behringer Poly D - 4 Voice Analog

sonicstate.com

While the Behringer Poly D offers a solid build and appealing sound reminiscent of the MiniMoog, it falls short of being a fully-featured polysynth. Its paraphonic nature allows for nice chord sounds, but the lack of wave modulation and limited sequencer functionality can frustrate users seeking versatility. The choice of a Juno-style chorus over other effects, while popular, may not suit everyone's taste. At $699, it's pricier than expected for a Behringer, raising the question of whether it competes effectively against more feature-rich alternatives like the Korg Minilogue XD. Overall, the Poly D shines in specific areas but leaves potential buyers weighing its limitations against its charm.

Great Interface, Terrible Sound

There's something decidedly not Model D about this. I don't know if it's the mixer, or the filter, or the VCA, but something sounds harsh when they changed the design to handle 4 VCOs. It's not llke it's terrible, but compared to a Moog or Behringer Model D, it sounds kinda bad.

its paraphonic. oscillators summer pre-filter... that's why they're doing the monopoly, same basic thing but with 4 different oscillators and a different fitler design (CEM/SSM chips)

Para D doesn't sound as cool as Poly D, but there's nothing poly about it.... awesome though I am sure it is
