PROS

  • Compact design saves space on pedalboards

  • Solid build quality

  • Does not color or weaken sound

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Dual functionality as volume and expression pedal

  • Adjustable pedal resistance for customized feel

CONS

  • Volume reduction is too aggressive at the start of pedal travel

  • Some units have inconsistent sweep tension and develop squeaks

  • Expensive compared to some alternatives

  • Requires adjustment for optimal performance

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Dunlop Volume X Mini Pedal DVP4.

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners recommend positioning the volume pedal before modulation effects like chorus for smoother volume swells, especially when using delay pedals.

    Source
  • Adjust the rocker torque by turning the screw under the heel-end with a 1/4" flat blade screwdriver for smoother control.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The DVP4 is a passive volume pedal, meaning it can only reduce volume and not boost it beyond the baseline.

    Source
  • The internal settings mainly adjust for auxiliary output functions and typically do not influence the pedal’s basic volume swell capability.

    Source
  • The Dunlop X Mini may have a narrower taper compared to other pedals, affecting the smoothness of volume swells.

    Source
  • The DVP4 can be used for wah modeling on the Quad Cortex, but calibration issues may arise if the incorrect cable type is used, leading to limited sweep range.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users report the pedal may be defective if it completely mutes instead of smoothly lowering the volume.

    Source
  • Owners find that the DVP4 requires practice to master smoother swells, with a need to slow down the beginning of the swell for a gradual effect.

    Source
  • Owners transitioning from a Crybaby Mini may find the DVP4's remaining sweep area unusual, requiring adaptation during performances.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users switch from the Ernie Ball VP Jr. to the Dunlop X Mini for better performance, despite a potentially narrower taper.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Worship guitarists frequently use the Dunlop X Mini for swells, finding it capable with the right technique adjustments.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Increasing the pedal's resistance can offer more control for gradual swells, especially useful for ambient music styles.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Ensure using a TRS cable instead of a TS cable for proper calibration with the Quad Cortex, switching the pedal's internal polarity to “TIP” for flawless operation.

Quick Hit: Dunlop Volume (X) Mini Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Dunlop Volume X Mini Pedal DVP4 impresses with its compact size and versatility, packing features like expression pedal conversion through an AUX switch and customizable settings via internal trim pots. Despite its small footprint, it offers a smooth and wide volume taper, making it a reliable option for musicians who need dynamic control. However, its all-black enclosure can be hard to spot on dark stages, and its lightweight design might lack the reassuring heft of larger pedals. Overall, it's a formidable tool for space-conscious setups without sacrificing functionality.

It worked well for a while...

I bought the Dunlop Volume X Mini after reading countless positive reviews and trying it out in a store. For the first year, I was genuinely impressed. But before its second year, it completely failed and became unusable.

I really loved the pedal when it worked, and I wish there were a practical way to repair it. Unfortunately, the internal design makes that nearly impossible. As much as I liked it, I can’t justify buying the same pedal again, knowing it might fall apart in just a couple of years. At this point, exploring volume pedals from other brands seems like the more sensible path forward.

Best mini VP pedal in it's class.

Basically doe's everything that the DOD Mini VP does but better. Has a better look and feel, better sweep for swells, has the ability to be an expression pedal. It is a little pricey though, and the plastic parts make me feel kinda nervous.

What's not to love?

We all know the Volume x series and its awesome ... this is just the littlest brother! It just works for me! Great sweep fits on a board with limited space for a big treadle peddle.

DON'T BUY!

This expression pedal sucks. I've used it for close to 20 shows now and it's worthless. I have adjusted everything I can on it, and it's largest problem was not fixed. Think of a normal expression pedal ranging from 1-10. The higher the knob turns to 10, the louder the sound, right? Not with the DVP4. It ranges from 1-10 alright, but it skips 8 and 9 all together. It's quiet and smooth until you get to the very last bit of the roller. Then it goes WAY louder and there is no smooth way to make this transition. It's only purpose is to smoothly control volume, and it doesn't do that. When I car doesn't drive or a plane doesn't fly, we MUST give them the lowest grade possible.

Dunlop, you done wrong.

Very Good

Small size for big pedalboards with loads of pedal. I use it as volume pedal.

Compact Expression Pedal

Useful compact expression pedal that I use to control settings on my Timeline.

Travel is firm which gives plenty of control - although some might find it maybe too firm.

I have tried to use it as a volume pedal, however, there is an initial jump in volume when moving it up from heel (e.g. 0 to 2 - misses 1) so I didn't find it usable for swells.

ghost_java666

Great little volume pedal.

It does everything I need it to do. A little pricey though.
