Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about EarthQuaker Devices Hoof V1.

Comparisons

  • The Hoof is less gainy and saturated than EHX reissues, resembling an early Tone Bender with more clarity and less compression.

    Source
  • The Hoof is considered smoother and less grainy compared to typical Muff pedals, aligning closer to a distortion pedal.

    Source
  • The Cloven Hoof, compared to the Hoof, features silicon transistors, providing higher volume, more aggressive highs and mids, and a tighter low end.

    Source
  • The Blackout Musket and Earthbound Supercollider were preferred over the Hoof by some users for their distinct fuzz characteristics.

    Source
  • The Hoof provides a more organic, "brown" fuzz compared to the Big Muff Pi's silicon, plasticky feel, with a classic germanium sag.

    Source
  • The Way Huge Swollen Pickle is suggested as a cheaper alternative with similar mid-scoop control features.

    Source

User experience

  • Users suggest pairing the Hoof with an EAE Halberd for infinite sustain and better integration in a mix.

    Source
  • Owners often mention a preference for the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh for its unique fuzz tone compared to the Hoof.

    Source
  • Users find the Hoof retains clarity and is more manageable at lower gain settings, making it suitable for controlled fuzz tones.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Hoof's shift knob allows for mid-frequency control, making it stand out in a mix without sounding chaotic.

    Source
  • Combining germanium and silicon diodes, the Hoof offers smoother tones with looser lows, while silicon transistors can push into distortion territory.

    Source
  • The Hoof's shift knob transitions from traditional Big Muff tones on the left side to a full-range, mid-swelling response on the right.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for alt-rock and grunge, the Hoof offers a smoother distortion rather than a heavily fuzzy sound.

    Source
  • The Hoof Reaper V1 allows stacking with the Reaper and an octave for expanded tonal options, making it versatile for diverse sound explorations.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Adding an EQ pedal post-Hoof can enhance midrange punch at 800Hz and 1.6kHz to address mids issues.

    Source
  • Boosting fuzz with an overdrive pedal or compressing with OD after can alter the Hoof's gain structures significantly, enhancing tonal flexibility.

Compact and powerful

I have the original EHX Ram's head, green russian Big Muff, Guild Foxey Lady, Op Amp Deluxe Big Muff, and other Big Muffs. This is the one I use in my pedalboard. It's small, it has top in/out, it's very versatile and can be crunchy or very heavy, with good clarity. It's the desert island big muff. Don't look further, buy this!

mettlegossett

Just the best

I have tried so many fuzz pedals and I keep coming back to this, it just sounds awesome no matter what you do with it and is capable of SO many different sounds.

chelcha

Excelent device!

This germanium fuzz pedal allows me to reach numerous grungy tones, very similar to the EHX Russian Muff.

dima_povalyaev

Clear fuzz with tons of tone

Lots of tones that you can dial in. Very defined sound compared to other fuzz pedals i've heard of tried.
