Description

Introducing the Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker, the perfect blend of vintage nostalgia and modern innovation. This fuzz effects pedal is a tribute to the early days of rock 'n' roll when musicians discovered distortion by abusing their speakers. With the Ripped Speaker, you get to relive that lo-fi, vintage distortion at low settings, which perfectly mimic the sounds created by a ripped speaker cone or a faulty tube. However, crank it up and the pedal transforms, giving you a modern, fully saturated fuzz tone that is truly monumental.

The Ripped Speaker boasts a unique RIP knob, a bias control that allows you to set the degree of clipping at the top and bottom of the signal waveform. This knob is a game-changer, offering a fantastic range of fuzz characters. At noon, the fuzz is perfectly biased, fat but not harsh, with an exceptional low end and top end bite. Turn the knob clockwise and you get a hard gating effect, perfect for that dying battery effect. A counter-clockwise turn offers a smoother gating effect for a different fuzz flavor.

The pedal's TONE control is active and provides a tilt-shift type EQ. This means you can dial in a darker tone with more lows and less highs, or a brighter tone with more highs and less lows.

Key Features:

  • Versatile fuzz effect pedal with a vintage to modern range.
  • Unique RIP knob for controlling the bias and character of fuzz.
  • Active TONE control with tilt-shift type EQ.
  • True bypass switching to maintain signal integrity when pedal is not in use.
  • Comes with a 9 Volt battery and accepts a standard EHX 9 Volt power supply.
  • Input and output: 6.3 mm jack.
  • Power consumption: 10 mA.

Critic Reviews

Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker brings the chaotic charm of damaged speaker tones to your pedalboard without the destructive consequences. Compact and fun, it offers a range of lo-fi distortion and fuzz sounds, perfect for adventurous players. Its controls—Volume, Tone, Fuzz, and Rip—allow for nuanced adjustments, making it a versatile addition for crafting unique tones. However, its wild side may be too extreme for some, potentially leading to chaotic sounds that don't suit every style. Overall, it's a playful and innovative option for those seeking to explore vintage-inspired fuzz effects.

Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker review: a noisy misnomer that delivers splat-fuzz fun

guitar.com

While the Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker claims to mimic the sound of a damaged speaker, it diverges into a lo-fi fuzz experience that can be quite entertaining. The pedal offers a range of voltage-starved fuzz tones, but its marketing may be misleading for those seeking an authentic 'ripped' sound. Users may find the manual's advice on control settings inaccurate, yet it manages to produce pleasant fuzz textures at a budget-friendly price. While it doesn't quite fulfill its name's promise, it still stands as a valuable noise box for those wanting a unique sound. However, it struggles to compete with higher-end fuzz pedals in the same realm.

Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

Electro-Harmonix's Ripped Speaker fuzz pedal delivers a gritty, lo-fi distortion that pays homage to classic sounds, making it an affordable choice for tone aficionados. Its compact design and intuitive controls like the unique Rip knob allow for versatile sound shaping, from crunchy chords to spitty notes. While its distinct vintage character may not appeal to all, those with a taste for the unconventional will find it a creative tool. The only drawback is that its extreme settings can border on unusable, but for those willing to experiment, the rewards are plentiful.

positive

Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker Review | GuitarPlayer

guitarplayer.com

The Electro-Harmonix Ripped Speaker fuzz pedal offers an impressive range of tones, from vintage buzz to modern grind, thanks to its innovative rip control. This four-knob pedal is a steal for its low price, delivering rich fuzz textures that cater to various playing styles. Its flexibility and responsive design allow for expressive dynamics, whether you're dialing back for clean tones or cranking up for saturated leads. However, the review doesn’t note any significant drawbacks, making it an essential addition for fuzz enthusiasts.
