Description
MXR Duke of Tone Overdrive Pedal
Crafted in harmony with boutique pedal maker Analog Man, the MXR Duke of Tone Overdrive Pedal is a delightful blend of vintage inspiration and modern versatility. This pedal is an overdrive connoisseur's dream, providing three modes of rich, harmonically complex overdrive that maintains the natural sound of your instrument. It offers a full range of overdrive flavors, from a clean boost to a saturated distortion, all wrapped up in a rugged, stage-ready enclosure.
The three-mode overdrive circuit ensures a wealth of tonal options. Boost mode delivers clean volume boost, perfect for solos or adding crunch to an already overdriven amp. OD mode produces a dynamic overdrive with tones ranging from subtle breakup to near-distortion. Distortion mode unleashes a full-bodied distortion capable of high-gain saturation.
Hand-selected components, including film and tantalum capacitors, give the Duke of Tone Overdrive a warm, musical overdrive tone. The overdrive circuit itself is based on a vintage tube overdrive design using JFETs to emulate the smooth distortion of tube overdrive. The result is a natural, amp-like overdrive tone that enhances the tone of your instrument rather than masking it.

Update - - This pedal grew on me!
Had to once again rethink my initial review for this pedal after playing it out for a few weeks. I initially honestly believed it was going to be "a life changing pedal" but came to the realization that there are other similar pedals much more affordable that do very similar things.
However I after a few more months of playing this live, I realized how versatile and awesome this pedal really is. It sounds awesome in boost and overdrive mode, and it stacks really well with other pedals. I've even used it as an "always on" type effect on a few worship gigs. I've used this pedal more than other pedals that do the same thing and I came to that realization this past Sunday. To me, it excels as a dirty boost or light gain overdrive. I still am not a fan of the Distortion mode, but I understand it's purpose now after having used this pedal more the past few weeks.
To me, I feel it reacts better with single coils however I got it to sound great with my Les Paul and SG. There is also an internal trim pot if you take off the back plat that adjusts how much high frequencies are coming through the pedal. So there is adjustability which is nice. There are some quirks with the pedal, like unity gain on this pedal in Overdrive mode is a lot like an original Blues Breaker, gotta crank it past two oclock just to get to Unity gain with your amp, and it does sound pretty damn good in most situations. Boost mode is op-amp based, so there is a big kick in volume, super useful for slamming the front end of your amp and it's a dirty boost too, so you can add a bit of grit (this is probably my favorite mode on the pedal). Is it close to the Prince of Tone? I mean, Analog Mike says it's identical, it just may not be a drive that is for everyone I feel? It works great for what I use it for, but I can see some folks being underwhelmed I feel. The steep price for a mini pedal also kina hurts it in my opinion, but it is a legit Analog Mike product, and you can get it now for a set price instead of ordering it for a lot of money and being put on a waitlist for years. It gets five stars from me based on the quality of the build, the tones (which really did grow on me) that I have been using with it and the fact that it is a legit Analog Mike product. Will put a caveat in here that there are more affordable options that do very similar things that I would probably recommend over the Duke if it's your first "Bluesbreaker" Style overdrive. But for the seasoned guitarist, I would absolutely recommend this pedal 100%
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Trim pot can be accessed inside the pedal by unscrewing the back plate of the pedal. Recommend turning it a little counter clockwise to start out, the Duke can be super bright for a lot of folks, I found my best results by dong that.

The predecessor to the Duke of Tone, the Prince of Tone is an identical pedal on paper, with the Duke drawing from the updates made to the Prince and putting them in a smaller form factor.
$38.18 - $59.00
It does the Blues Breaker style Overdrive thing with a few more tricks. You can switch from True Bypass mode to Buffered Bypass mode with this pedal. You can hold down the footswitch when the drive is engaged and get a "Shine" mode, which ups the presence and higher frequencies of the pedal. Big caveat though, it's QC isn't great. I had two die on me including one during a gig. Thankfully the company has solid customer service and was able to send me replacements without having to pay for shipping.
$36.19 - $56.00
It's a point for point clone of a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal, which is what the Duke of Tone essentially is (with extra steps).
$501.54
The oldest direct ancestor of the Duke of Tone, the big box Bluesbreaker is an excellent pedal in its own right, but less pedalboard friendly.
$699.00
King Of tone the best. There is also a four position configuration DIP switch on the inside of the KoT which you can use to choose between Clean, OD, and DISTORTION modes for each side. I designed this switch to allow almost anyone to be able to find the exact sounds they want. This picture shows the factory settings. It is two pairs of two switches, the left two switches are for the red side and the right two for the yellow side. You can set either side to normal OD mode or CLEAN mode by moving it's OD/CLEAN dip switch (switch 1 or 3). You can set either side for additional distortion, with the DIST dip switches (2 and 4). When you turn one of these DIST switches ON you get significantly more and harder distortion, and a little less volume. When the DIST switch is on you can't get the normal OD or CLEAN modes on that side. See the manual for specific information on setting the DIP switches.
