Description

Introducing the Electro-Harmonix J Mascis Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi, a fuzz effects pedal that's far from ordinary. This pedal is not just a mere tool, but an integral part of your musical journey, just as it has been for J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. This 'always-on' pedal is a faithful replica of Mascis's favorite 1973 V2 Violet Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi, renowned for its unrivaled clarity, presence, and definition even under the most demanding settings.

This pedal is not just the tonal foundation of Dinosaur Jr., but also the heart of J Mascis’s laid-back 6-string virtuosity. It's the sonic backbone of the 'Freak Scene' that defined indie rock in the '80s and '90s. The pedal is a perfect blend of the iconic vintage-style sound of a Big Muff classic and the advantages of modern construction.

This pedal has also earned its nickname, the “Ram’s Head”, from the distinct logo in its corner. Though the design is debatable, the performance of this pedal is not. It delivers a powerful sound with endless sustain, ideal for any musical setting.

Key Features:

  • Signature fuzz tone of Big Muff enthusiast J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.

    Source
  • Pairing with other reverb and delay pedals, like the Afterneath, offers unique soundscapes for experimental or ambient music.

    Source
  • The Op Amp Muff is effective for Placebo's "Pure Morning" tone when played through a 2x12 cabinet, but less so with a combo amp.

    Source
  • The J Mascis Ram's Head is preferred for live performances for its high-end definition, which maintains clarity in a mix.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users felt disappointed when discovering the J Mascis edition is essentially a rebranded Ram’s Head reissue.

    Source
  • Owners note the pedal's appeal lies in its affordability as a Ram’s Head variant, rather than its association with J Mascis.

Electro-Harmonix J Mascis Ram's Head Big Muff review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

Dinosaur Jr. fans will find much to love in the Electro-Harmonix J Mascis Ram's Head Big Muff Pi, which delivers quality vintage fuzz sounds with impressive note separation. While it's compact and plays well with amps, it may require a noise gate for optimal performance when stacking. Though it boasts enhanced articulation over standard models, its price point is a consideration, as standard versions are cheaper. Overall, this pedal is a must-have for collectors and fuzz enthusiasts alike.

J Mascis Ram's Head Big Muff Pi Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Electro-Harmonix J Mascis Ram's Head Big Muff Pi delivers a clear, powerful fuzz that retains chord detail while packing a punch. Its signature edition adds a touch of unique aggression, but at a premium price—$17 more than the standard model. While some may find the tonal differences subtle, fans of Dinosaur Jr. and fuzz enthusiasts will appreciate its stylish design and sonic capabilities. However, the price may lead buyers to question if the signature is worth it when a standard model offers similar performance. Overall, this pedal shines for its versatility and character, making it a worthy addition for the right player.

Electro-Harmonix J Mascis Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi review

guitar.com

While the J Mascis Ram’s Head Big Muff Pi boasts the signature charm of the Dinosaur Jr. frontman, it ultimately offers little beyond aesthetic appeal. The pedal delivers the classic Muff sound and rich fuzz that fans crave, but it’s identical to the standard model in functionality, leaving buyers questioning the price premium. With no unique sonic enhancements to justify its cost, this pedal may attract collectors more than serious musicians. It excels in delivering warm, versatile tones, but those already familiar with the original might find it hard to justify the extra expense. Overall, it’s a solid, if unoriginal, option for fuzz enthusiasts.

A Muff That's Bigger and Purpler

I've been using 90's versions of Big Muff's for years and have always been happy with their sound. This 2022 artist signature is completely different in a good way: tighter, grittier and simply inspiring to play on. The harmonics are a much more temperamental to bends which unsurprisingly makes you want to play more with a tremolo bar and slow, half-step bends. Love it!
