Epiphone Les Paul SL Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Epiphone Les Paul SL is a stunning deal, delivering impressive quality for under $100. It’s lightweight, with a poplar body and slim taper neck that’s easy to play, even for extended sessions. The ceramic single-coil pickups offer a nice surprise with clear, versatile tones. However, the guitar shows minor cosmetic flaws and tuning instability, and the pickups can be noisy at high gain. Ideal for beginners, budget-conscious musicians, or modding enthusiasts, the SL is a compelling option for those seeking a gig-worthy instrument without breaking the bank. Despite its quirks, the SL is a remarkable bargain.

Review: Epiphone Les Paul SL | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Epiphone Les Paul SL is a budget-friendly guitar that punches above its weight with impressive playability and surprisingly robust single-coil pickups, offering a distinct tone perfect for rock and blues. Despite its affordable price tag, it lacks the iconic P-90s, which may disappoint some purists. However, its lightweight design and versatile performance make it an excellent choice for beginners and seasoned players looking for a solid backup. While not without its compromises, the SL stands out in its class for delivering substantial value and 'swagger' at a modest price point.

Pickups sound nice, but it needs a lot of work.

Pros:

The pickups sound nice, though they are single coils, which might not be what you want from a Les Paul. It's nice and light, (I don't have a scale capable of measuring guitars yet). Bolt on neck, which I personally (IN MY COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE OPINION) prefer over set necks.

Cons:

It plays terribly. The fret job is a joke, notes just instantly die when you try to bend a string. The tuners are really poor quality, and the bridge can't be intonated. The guitar does not stay in tune for more than about 10 minutes. The pickup switch started developing faults after about a year, and now it will occasionally just completely kill the signal.

I plan to mod pretty much everything on this guitar, when I have money and time to throw at it, it really needs a lot of work.

Very good beginner solution

I would absolutely recommend this guitar to a new player looking to get their first guitar, however, one should look out for quality control issues as well. For example, my SL's strap button stripped out of the wood within 5 hrs of use. Aside from the minor issues, it sounds solid and plays great.

Twang machine and super light...

No matter how dirty you play, these single coils retain that 'twang'. A super light guitar used for getting down ideas and lugging around when I travel.

A Pretty Good Beginner guitar.

So i ordered mine in heritage cherry, and is a great guitar, especially hooked up to an amp. of course like most gibson and epiphone guitars, it goes out of tune easily.

Great modifiable, work horse guitar.

Former guitar of Leanne Trachy, used on various works up until December 2018.

jorma

I ordered mine in Sunset Yellow

With its two single coils and melody maker surf vibe it should be a spunky favorite

Shown at 14:57. Steve, likely to his surprise, has gotten quite a bit of use out of this instrument. Bought because of a classic playing-guitar-while-jumping-out-of-the-water photoshoot, and because it was the cheapest guitar he could find at the time. Since purchasing it, Steve has used the instrument in a number of guitar based experiments, such as playing a guitar underwater, and dressing up in tin foil like a maniac to find the source of a weird signal his gear was picking up.
