The definition of clean
The amplifier part of this is identical to the standard TRRI, but the cabinet is wider, taller and deeper, and the speaker is very different. Made by Eminence, this huge and heavy 15 incher (with a 4 inch voice coil) is extremely clean, deep and 3D sounding. The aluminium dust cap makes this a much brighter speaker than the most 15 inch speakers, and the increased cabinet volume makes everything sound larger than life. The ultimate amp for surf, steel guitar, clean jazz and country picking. Does not take distortion well.
Anything negative? Well, it is heavy. Much heavier than a 212 Twin Reverb. Also, the reverb potentiometer should have been logarithmic, not linear. As it is, you get no reverb or suddenly a lot of it. But that is true for most classic Fender amps, I think.
Update: While the stock speaker is fantastic for clean sounds, it responds less great to overdriven and fuzzy sounds. So I replaced it with a Jensen C15K (which actually exists in a 4 ohm version, though not listed on the Jensen website). I thought this was going to be a compromise, but not really. The cleans are now different, but just as great. Slightly less bass dominated, but that is a good thing live. Also more transparent in the high mids and a bit airier in the top. Also good things. But the fuzzy sounds are much, much better. Especially a Mark 1 Tonebender clone now sounds absolutely fantastic through this new speaker, which also takes 6 kilos off the weight of this combo. Which is a very good thing.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Channel 2: Bright off; Volume 3.5–4.5; Treble 4.5; Middle 8; Bass 2. High input with single-coils, Low input with humbuckers. For rock, jazz or pop, reverb at 2.5–3. For surf and ambient stuff, reverb at 3.5–4. One day, I'll change the reverb pot to a log pot, it makes no sense having so much unusable range.
I use channel 1 for organ emulation, going through a EHX C9 and a Crumar Burn leslie simulator. I use both inputs, summing the stereo outputs to mono. For a flat EQ response, Bass and Treble at one, Middle at ten.
