  • Heavy, potentially difficult to transport without assistance

  • Optimal sound performance requires high volume, which may not be practical for all settings

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender 'Drip Edge' Silverface Super Reverb (1968-1969).

Build quality

  • The power transformer is not original and dates to the 9th week of 1972, which may affect vintage value.

    Source
  • The reverb tank quality is crucial; vintage tanks often outperform modern replacements in sound quality.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's suggested to use a 5U4 rectifier tube to maintain appropriate voltage levels due to the non-original power transformer.

    Source
  • Pre-1977 models are preferred due to their non-ultralinear output and better power supply design. Look for 70 watts on the rear panel to avoid these.

    Source
  • Swapping the RCA connections when replacing the reverb tank can resolve connection issues, as some tanks have color-coded connectors that are opposite to typical amp cables.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Installing a PPIMV (post-phase-inverter master volume) was recommended for greater control over output volume.

    Source
  • Consider changing the blue and black capacitors in the doghouse for more reliable soldering, as current ones appear sloppily installed.

    Source
  • A MOD 4AB3C1B replacement reverb tank offers a richer, warmer reverb that many owners prefer over the original tank for achieving a lush sound quality.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The 1968 Super Reverb is noted to be quieter at zero volume than newer 64 Custom Deluxe Reverb Hand Wired models.

    Source
  • The MOD replacement tank can deliver a reverb sound that closely matches the lush intensity of a ’64 Custom Hand Wired Deluxe Reverb.

    Source

User experience

  • Some find the Super Reverb preferable over newer Deluxe Reverbs due to its quieter operation and tonal clarity.

    Source
  • The weight and bulkiness of the amp are significant considerations, with some owners humorously suggesting the need for a dolly and back brace.

    Source
  • Adjusting loose metal plates inside the reverb tank can significantly improve reverb sound, making it fuller and less fizzy.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Early models with aluminum strips on the speaker cloth, known as "Drip-Edge," are more collectible due to their unique cosmetics.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Models with the "Drip-Edge" from 1967-1968 hold higher value due to their aesthetic appeal, despite having the same circuit as later models.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • A well-serviced Super Reverb can provide reliable performance for another 50 years, making it a long-term investment for players.

1968 Fender Super Reverb Silverface

My 65 lb.1/2 stack of Fender tone! I have other amps but this is my #1. I bought it from a guy who painted bikes for a very famous motorcycle club. The tubes would light up but no sound. I bought it for $25.00 anyways. Fuse assembly was the issue. Typical usual maintenance over the years: new tubes, some filter caps, and bias. I DID NOT change it to Blackface specs. I play Punk, Rock, Blues, and Country with either a '93 Jeff Beck Stratocaster or a '95 Gibson Les Paul Standard. I easily played 250-300 gigs with it. I ride the volume between 5-6.

I rather like the 1980 with the BF cosmetics, still sounds really hifi due to the cbs circuit changes, but a great amp for huge cleans and surfy verb

thom_yanochko

Yeah, I've been really enjoying it. Can't complain.
