Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Prosonic.

Features and functionality

  • The amp's single EQ for both clean and drive channels can lead to sound mismatches when switching between them.

    Source
  • The clean channel is noted for producing a unique non-clean sound when cranked halfway, surprising those expecting typical Fender tones.

    Source
  • The Prosonic includes a 3-way rotary switch on the back to adjust the rectifier, allowing users to experiment with different sound textures.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners suggest mods by Zinky, the amp's designer, to eliminate channel popping and adjust circuit capacitors.

    Source
  • Upgraded transformers from Zinky are valued for enhancing longevity and performance, especially for touring and recording over decades.

    Source

User experience

  • The Prosonic's reverb is notably noisy, often leading users to disable it during play.

    Source
  • Owners have praised its ability to deliver Mesa Boogie-esque distortion while maintaining classic Fender cleans, highlighting its versatility.

    Source
  • Despite its weight, the Prosonic is appreciated for its robust performance and tonal quality, even when converted from a combo to a head unit.

    Source
  • Owners find the Prosonic's cleans to be very loud, which can be challenging for dynamic song transitions using the factory footswitch.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Preferred by some users over the internal combo speakers, a 4x12 cab is recommended for a fuller sound.

    Source
  • The Prosonic combo is noted for superior sound quality compared to its head unit counterpart, possibly due to additional tubes used for reverb.

    Source

Build quality

  • The amp is reported to be heavy, which may affect portability for gigging musicians.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Limited edition red tolex Prosonic models with matching cabs can command higher prices, though the amp generally sells for $500-$700.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The amp struggles with loud-soft-loud dynamics typical of Pixies/Nirvana songs when using the included footswitch due to a lack of true dual channel functionality.

From Guitar Buyer, October 2009: “I’ve got a Fender Prosonic that’s a right warhorse – it’s been around the world with me, that has. I bought it the first week I started working with Pulp. The Prosonic is kind of the mainstay but I use it in stereo with either a Fender Deluxe or with an old 1963 Fender Tremolux. The Prosonic’s quite harsh. I don’t mean that in a bad way, but its sound is very direct so adding the Tremolux kind of softens that off."

"I bought this off session monster Mark Johns in the late 90's, amazing sounding rock amp with three gain stages. I don't use it much these days but I don't really want to get rid of it."
