A (Little)-Bear Necessity?

This is a first impression rather than a considered review - It's my first dedicated distortion pedal after all. Previously I've happily made do with a BD-2 clone hitting hard a Vox PF 15 to meet my modest needs.

Since I'm more into crunchy overdrive than full on distortion or fuzz, I've not been inclined to invest much in the heavier side of gain. However, this RT-2 promised to fill this broad gap in my sound palette and I got it simply because it's available so cheap!

With pedal choices I lean towards the classic pedal types in order to establish a 'standard' foundation. I opted for this Rat clone for its tonal versatility rather than the DS-1 which to my ears is simply heavier than my taste prefers.

The R.Attack case shamelessly riffs on the design and graphics of the ProCo Turbo Rat but generously offers two more alternative Rat circuits by way of a three way switch. All three modes are pleasing to me.

My present favourite "Tur"-bo mode clips using visible LED's which are a helpful visual cue when I'm setting a low gain for edge of break up. "Tur"-bo delivers a fuller bassier tone through the 8" speaker of my Vox Pathfinder which suits me best for home practice whereas the "Vin"-tage seems to be a bit tighter and grittier though not quite as loud. There is a significant volume drop with the "Dir"-ty Rat mode. This is not so much a flaw but rather a feature of its emulation of the Dirty Rat's germanium diode circuit. This mode is the most sonically compressed and fuzzy sounding to my ear.

Altogether this one pedal provides a very broad spectrum of distortion from cleanish crunch to fuzzy-licious sustain. A much better tool for me than the Boss DS-1 which sits squarely outside/between my tonal Goldilocks zones.
