Build quality

  • Plastic components can break; headband snapped for one owner with a larger head, and another experienced a broken earpiece from a fall.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Silverstone Acoustic Foam behind the driver can clean up sound but may emphasize upper-treble sibilance.

    Source
  • Using Brainwavz HM5 pads improves comfort but can exacerbate high-mid issues and reduce bass impact.

    Source
  • Electrical tape over vents can reduce upper-treble sibilance but doesn't resolve bass or high-mid issues.

    Source
  • Brainwavz XL pads are highly recommended for the Retros due to the thin and stiff stock pads, significantly improving comfort for extended listening sessions.

    Source

User experience

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Retros are primarily recommended for home listening a few times a week, especially when paired with aftermarket pads for enhanced comfort.

Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ Headphone Review - Sonarworks Blog

Sure, these Monoprice headphones may feel cheap, but their price is even cheaper. Despite the plastic build and discomfort during long sessions, they deliver surprisingly good sound, with a detachable cable as a bonus. Perfect for tracking and recreational listening, though not ideal for mixing without calibration. Their unbeatable value makes them a worthwhile choice for budget-conscious musicians.

Best budget headphones for risk-free listening

Best $30 headphones you will EVER get. I use these when I don't want to risk my M50s getting broken!

Cheap price, Nice sound!

Super inexpensive headphones with pretty decent quality sound. They were purchased as a quick fix while waiting on my Sennheiser HD 25-1ii, I bought them at $17 and $5 for replacement ear pads. A month later as I write this, Monoprice still has them listed at $17.98 (9-7-15). Not fashionable on the head, and does get a tad hot.. but they're DIRT cheap! Give'em to your pops if you feel they suck that bad..

Excellent set of cans.

These are really great. Not much to say really, they do everything a pair of headphones should use. Not incredible bass, but just enough to where it's not overwhelming, and not too little of it. The sound is clear as day and sounds great.
