Description

The Nobels ODR-mini is a compact powerhouse that brings the legendary "Natural Overdrive" sound of the ODR-1 to a pint-sized pedalboard-friendly format. This overdrive effects pedal is a favorite among Nashville session players, offering a sound that skillfully bridges the gap between transparent overdrive and the mid-forward green pedal tones. Its 3-knob control set—Drive, Level, and the unique Spectrum knob—ensures you can dial in everything from subtle coloration to hard-rock crunch.

The Spectrum knob is where the ODR-mini truly shines. Unlike typical tone controls, it allows you to adjust bass and treble simultaneously while leaving your mids untouched. This results in a transparent, dynamic range that complements any guitar amp setup. Whether you're looking for a light harmonic boost or a gritty blues tone, this pedal can handle it all with finesse.

In addition to its sonic flexibility, the ODR-mini boasts true-bypass switching, ensuring your tone remains pure when the pedal is not engaged. It also features glow-in-the-dark knobs, making it perfect for dark stages or studios. The pedal can run on 9-18V for added headroom, giving you more control over your sound. If you're in search of a versatile overdrive pedal that retains the natural character of your guitar's tone, the Nobels ODR-mini is a must-have addition to your gear collection.

Key Features:

  • Compact design with the iconic "Natural Overdrive" sound of the ODR-1
  • Unique Spectrum control for simultaneous bass and treble adjustment
  • True-bypass switching for uncolored tone
  • Glow-in-the-dark knobs for easy visibility in low-light conditions

Comparisons

    Source
  • The pedal is considered a better choice than a Blues Driver for cutting through mixes, providing desirable crunch and clarity.

    Source

    Source

Use cases and applications

    Source
  • The ODR-mini effectively enhances the sound of an Electro-Harmonix Crayon, making it suitable for lead tones reminiscent of late 80s and early 90s John Prine records.

    Source
  • The ODR-mini pairs well with Telecasters equipped with high-output pickups, maintaining tone without needing significant setting adjustments when switching to a Les Paul.

    Source

User experience

  • The pedal is often placed after mid-boost pedals like the SD-1 and before more aggressive ones like the Big Muff for varied tonal options.

    Source
  • Users frequently pair the ODR-mini with a Strymon Iridium for high-quality recording results.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the ODR-mini's responsiveness to dynamic playing, noting it remains clean with light picking and introduces natural overdrive when strumming harder.

Nobels ODR-1 BC & ODR-mini review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Nobels ODR-mini delivers a rich, full-bodied overdrive at an unbeatable price, making it a hidden gem among pedals. Its compact size is perfect for saving space without sacrificing sound quality, while the dynamic response allows for smooth transitions from subtle boosts to robust drive. However, it lacks the bass-cut feature of its larger counterpart, which might be a downside for some users. Overall, this pedal is a fantastic option for players seeking versatility and warmth in their tone without breaking the bank.

Review: Nobels ODR-mini

guitar.com

Nobels' ODR-mini stands out as a clever and versatile overdrive pedal, offering a rich, natural tone that diverges from typical Tube Screamer clones. Its low-gain sound is warm and inviting, while the unique Spectrum control adds an unexpected dimension, allowing players to shape their tone without harshness. However, some may find the Spectrum control's function a bit elusive, and the pedal's compression might not appeal to everyone. Overall, it’s a solid choice for those seeking a nuanced overdrive that can transition from subtle crunch to aggressive rock, but it may require some exploration to fully grasp its potential.

Nobels ODR-Mini

soundonsound.com

The Nobels ODR-Mini packs boutique-like tonal quality into a compact design, appealing particularly to players who appreciate a nuanced overdrive. Its unique Spectrum control offers a versatile EQ that enhances mids while maintaining note clarity across its wide drive range. However, the lack of a battery option and a potentially less exciting initial impression may deter some users. Overall, it excels in subtlety and dynamic response, making it ideal for studio work or live settings, especially with single-coil pickups. If you prefer a more understated drive, this pedal definitely merits consideration.

Little Mayhem

I got this pedal beat up and used for 40 bucks and it is my go-to for cutting leads. The drive is dynamic and alive, but sounds way better than a Tube Screamer.

Great. Not a TS not a "klone" but it's own great transparent beef

This is a good product. Some say it's a bit bassy, but that has not been my experience, even with an LP. Spectrum knob keeps your mids in place avoiding nasal stuff but adding depth and crunch to taste. So compact and you can run 18v power into it instead of 9v which, for me, saves me from buying another power brick and also seems to add some clarity.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Spectrum at noon; powered with 18v, and paired with another drive for staging.

Great overdrive that might not be everyone's cup of tea.

After believing this to be another Tube Screamer clone (it's not), and seeing videos on YouTube about this being a "Secret weapon Overdrive used by Pro's in Nashville" I decided to give this version of the Nobels ODR-1 a try. I have two guitars mind you, one a Les Paul copy from Vintage, and another a 1997 Gibson SG Special. Both equipped with humbuckers. I could no for the life of me at first get a sound out of this pedal without having a very boomey low end. The spectrum knob helped a bit but that low end boom was still there and trying to cut the low end with this pedal was kind of a pain. I ended up getting rid of my first Nobels because of this issue.

Fast forward a few months later, I did some more research on the pedal and realized it was originally made to emulate an old Marshall Super Bass and that you can run it in 18v which opens up the pedal quite a bit. It immediately became clear what this pedal was going for so I went ahead and purchased another ORD-1 Mini. And I also understood why so many fans of it used Telecasters and/or single coil pickup guitars. It's best utilized for a single coil with a lot of highs. Finding all this out, I first put the pedal on 18v power to open it up a bit (Big help), then I paired it with an EQ pedal to get that low end boom sound out. Ended up working wonders, now both of my guitars have a very creamy and musical overdrive when the ODR-1 is engaged. It became my go to "first stage" overdrive.

It's a high quality pedal, small form factor, built like a tank and has a cool look. You gotta do research into what this pedal is and does well. Out of the box plugged into a 9v power adapter, it's going to sound bass heavy and boomy with a pair of humbuckers. It was kind of designed for single coils in mind with the pedal modeling essentially a bass heavy amplifier.

Great compact overdrive for the price

I usually use more clean tones and chorus and when it came to buying an overdrive pedal I wanted something cheap and compact that was still reliable. I found that the ODR mini offers exactly that with it's small build and great sound, as it offered a lot of the mellow overdrive that I was looking for.
