Nujabes’ main workspace. The monitors are Fostex NF-1A’s, and seen running on the screen is Steinberg Cubase VST (through an Apple PowerMac G4/500MHz). Set up on top of his master keyboard, the Roland A-80, is a Waldorf 4Pole.

What are your favourite keyboards?

"The Roland A50 and A80. And I've started to like the Korg T1. They are all as good or as bad as you want to make them. One of the main problems I have is with the concept of pianists trying to play master keyboards which simulate a wooden piano. Keyboards have nothing to do with pianos! What's interesting now is how the body design of keyboards is changing. The contours of the [human] body will be better catered for and studies in posture relating to typewriting will be applied. All of this will affect the whole music industry. You will see unusual controllers, not just flat or two dimensional things, coming on to the market."

According to the Blue Oyster Cult's live gear list, Castellano uses the Roland A-80 controller.

Hague uses a Roland A80 as his master keyboard — "I don't actually use many of its functions; the only reason I have it is because I like the way the keyboard feels" — and professes a particular fondness for his Dynacord CLS222 Leslie simulator. "I use it on all kinds of stuff: guitars, vocals, keyboards. It gives you an effect of motion, but it's not chorusing or flanging. It particularly brings digital organ sounds to life, which can otherwise be a bit dull."

LEVI SEACER plays a Gibson Epiphone ("Because my stuff is clean stuff") straight into the board. He has a rack-mounted Zoom unit 9010, a Cry Baby chorus pedal, a Roland GPS and a Boss digital delay pedal. On "Thunder" and "Live for Love" Levi pulls out an Ibanez guitar with double humbucking pickups. Levi uses D'Addario strings.

When TONY U. reaches for a guitar, it's either a Charvel or a hollowbody Epiphone. Tony's strings are either GHS lights or Dean Markleys. He has a Zoom effects processor.

SONNY THOMPSON plays an Oswald bass (though be admits his favorite is an Alembic, "a great bass") with a GB8 effects processor, an Akai Octaver and a Boss Octaver. Sonny uses a Heavy Metal distortion pedal and plugs into a Trace Elliot amp. He prefers GHS heavy strings because "they seem brightest- they keep the boing longest."

ROSIE GAINES plays a Hammond organ onstage, and has a Korg and Roland D-50 MIDI'd to the Hammond. Rosie sings through Shure microphones. Rosie is also leaving the NPG to go out on her own.

TOMMY BARBRELLA plays a Roland A80 and an A50 controller, a Korg T3, an old Prophet which he uses on "Kiss" and a few others "for that old analog sound." Tommy also carries a new Roland JD800, a couple of E-mu E-max 2s, a Proteus 1 and Proteus 2, and a Roland D550.

MICHAEL BLAND's drums are a combination of Sonor, Yamaha and Gretach, with Zililian cymbals and Vater sticks. Trying to get mere details out of Michael is useless. "I abhor shop talk," he says. "I don't know when we change heads, I don't know when we get new cymbals. I don't have any emotional attachments to gear at all."

At 4 minutes and 11 seconds into the video "Avantasia - Farewell (Amanda Somerville) [The Flying Opera 2011]" on YouTube, Michael Rodenberg is seen using a Roland A-80 Controller during a live performance with Avantasia.

Smith and Orzabal front the band playing bass and six-string guitars respectively, and concentrating on delivering the songs to the audience. Behind them the drummer, percussionist, guitarist, saxophonist, and backing vocalists concede nothing to Tears for Fears' techno-pop past. Even the keyboards appear to play a modest part in the proceedings - Oleta Adams' grand piano and Andy Davis' Roland A80 MIDI controller aren't going to get the technophiles sweating.

In the concert at Viña del Mar on Avenida Perú, Rodrigo Aboitiz can be seen using a Roland A-80 Controller, as evidenced in the video by Carlos Palma titled "01 1995 La Ley Avenida Peru" on YouTube.
