My Solid Rock
The Roland Fantom X7 has been the primary keyboard in my live rig since early 2007. The thing just works, every time, all the time. As a live controller, the Fantom X is very capable. The structure of the performance object in the system allows a mix/match of up to 16 layers and mapping zones. The sounds are generally good with no SRX expansion cards added. The best sounds on the box are probably the strings and brass, with pianos right behind those items. The organs are severely lacking on the other hand and I have never used them live. Overall, a 4 out of 5 for the role it needs to perform in my rig. The two most significant flaws in the machine are the slow sample file loads and saves on the OS and the flaw in the aftertouch of the keyboard assembly. Regardless, the thing just keeps on working, every time and I can't imagine replacing it in my live rig.
