Our go to Vocoder
The main vocoder we use in the studio. Sounds great on pretty much everything.

Daron used the Roland VP-330 since 2005 for Old School Hollywood and War?. He still uses it as a vocoder for the bridge of War? in live perfomances.
"This was a synth that P bought before the newer record, before 'Business Casual,' and that ended up being really useful to us. Obviously there's a Vocoder function that he did on the 'Hot Mess' demo. 'Hot Mess' is not Talk Box, it's this Vocoder. We ended up using this for other sounds and other patches, like for the human voice. I love that. That's in the intro to 'Contagious' and in 'Hot Mess' in the chorus. It's actually cooler than the Vocoder preset. It also has great strings on it. So it's using the Vocoder for something different than what it's intended. There's no MIDI on this. We copy paste a lot of parts because it's got to sound robotic, it's got to be modern."
Kraftwerk has utilized the Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus, as detailed in the Kraftwerk FAQ.
"I've got this upstairs -- I borrowed it from a friend to record some stuff for the new album [The Fat of the Land]. I think it's one of those things you can use a couple of times, and then throw in a cupboard. It's got some nice strings on it, but you can't get many sounds from the vocoder. The typical '80s electro voice, but not much else."
Vangelis plays a Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus with his left hand on this photo. Roland VP-330 was the synth he used for strings on the Blade Runner soundtrack.
A photograph from Phil Collins' home studio, published in the March 1985 issue of International Musician & Recording World, shows a Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus positioned against the wall just below the window. This vocoder was notably used in the backing vocals of his debut solo single "In the Air Tonight" from the 1981 album Face Value.
The Roland VP-330 is featured in the "Studio Equipment List" from Vince Clarke's website.
In the live performance of Genesis's "Afterglow" from the 1981 Three Sides Live tour, Tony Banks can be seen using the Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus, as shown in a video uploaded by TheRipples70 on YouTube.
Relase date: 1979 Type: Analog synthesizer
About: The Roland VP-330 combined a simple String Synth with a Vocoder. The strings sound very similar to Roland's RS Series. The VP-330 was built in two main versions. The original MK-1 had rocker switches and the MK-2 had buttons eith LED's. The MK-1 is said to sound richer.

I don't surround myself with loads of gear. I'm better with limited stuff and getting the most out of it."
