Critic Reviews

Vemuram Jan Ray Pedal Review

guitarpedaldemos.com

The Vemuram Jan Ray pedal is a sonic homage to Fender blackface amps, offering lush clean to saturated tones with intuitive controls. While it excels in delivering vintage vibes, it's not a mid-voiced pedal, so it won't replace your Klon or TS9. The reviewer appreciates its sound quality but notes that owning a blackface amp lessens its appeal. The limited availability adds an urgency to potential purchases. Allegations of it being a Timmy pedal variant are mentioned, suggesting buyers should compare before committing. Overall, it’s a niche pedal for those chasing a specific vintage tone.

Vemuram Jan Ray Review - Humbucker Soup

humbuckersoup.com

The Vemuram Jan Ray overdrive pedal shines with its impeccable hand-built quality and dynamic range, capturing the essence of a "Fender Magic 6" amp setting. Its intuitive controls and brass housing enhance both performance and aesthetics. Musicians seeking authentic breakup, sustain, and harmonic richness will appreciate its versatility across various guitar styles. While priced on the higher side at around $375, the pedal's exceptional build and sound quality offer impressive value, rivaling even the famed Analogman King of Tone. Ideal for passionate guitarists, the Jan Ray is a worthy investment for those desiring a true Blackface experience.

positive

Vemuram Jan Ray - Mixdown Magazine

mixdownmag.com.au

The Vemuram Jan Ray is a sophisticated overdrive pedal that shines with clean tones reminiscent of 60s Blackface Fender amps. It offers a natural compression with clear highs and supportive lows, making it ideal for brightening dark-sounding guitars. The hidden Saturation trim pot is a standout feature, allowing for detailed control over the drive. However, its refined nature may not appeal to those seeking a more rugged sound. Overall, it’s a classy choice for players who appreciate nuanced techniques.

TC Electronic Spark Booster

$49.00 - $76.00

cheaper alternative

The Vemuram Jan Ray is known as the "transparent overdrive," whatever that means. They retail for almost $400 in the US. Unless you're a lawyer or doctor, it'll be out of reach. Go check out the TC Electronic Spark. It's even more transparent given that it's designed as a clean booster. But, it is also a gain pedal (it's got a gain knob) with an EQ (bass, treble knobs). It'll have a lil bit of the Boss SD1 style chimeyness to it but you can dial that out using the bass knob. I could easily approx the Jan Ray sound with this $63 pedal. BTW, this pedal is so popular, it's backordered at Sweetwater.
