    Source
  • The Warhorn includes bass and treble controls, offering more tonal shaping compared to simpler overdrives.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Warhorn is noted to be similar to a Tube Screamer with a midrange-focused sound, while Ages is more aligned with a Bluesbreaker, potentially incorporating elements of the Timmy pedal.

    Source
  • Compared to the EQD Plumes, the Warhorn is considered less impressive for those seeking a Tube Screamer-style sound.

    Source
  • The Warhorn was preferred over the Timmy pedal for its full-range sound and versatility in low-gain settings.

    Source
  • The dual overdrive feature allows for independent adjustment of low, medium, or high overdrive settings on both sides, offering expanded tonal options.

    Source
  • The Hotcake pedal is preferred by some users for a full-bodied mid-gain tone, making the Warhorn feel less impactful in comparison.

    Source
  • For those seeking Tube Screamer variations, the Voodoolabs Sparkledrive and VHT V Drive are recommended for their versatility and affordability, especially in used markets.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Warhorn serves well as an "always-on" light gain pedal, especially useful for indie rock with Les Paul or Jazzmaster guitars.

    Source
  • Cranking the bass and using mode 3 on the Ages results in a "juicy" overdrive sound, adding versatility for various musical styles.

    Source
  • The Warhorn's asymmetrical setting is favored for achieving a broad, high-quality sound suitable for low-gain applications.

    Source
  • The Warhorn can be utilized as a clean-enhancer, boosting mids as an always-on pedal, though some prefer the Arrows for this purpose.

    Source
  • Experimenting with pedal order and settings is advised for better integration of the Warhorn with other overdrive pedals.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Purchasing the combo pedal offers nearly a 40% discount compared to buying the Warhorn and Ages separately, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the Warhorn's light gain capabilities, often preferring it over the Ages, which requires tweaking to find its ideal use.

    Source
  • Owners have tested the Warhorn with a Fender Jazzmaster and Gibson Les Paul, highlighting its adaptability across different guitar types.

🎾 Walrus Audio Warhorn Mid-Range Overdrive - Review

tonepedia.com

The Walrus Audio Warhorn Mid-Range Overdrive is a versatile pedal that offers a solid overdrive sound with a simple yet effective clipping/compression toggle. While it's easy to use and delivers impressive tones, its lower drive settings can sometimes get lost in a mix. The pedal's versatility might stretch it too thin, making some settings sound less balanced, particularly in the high trebles. Despite its affordability, it doesn't stand out in a competitive market. Overall, it's a decent choice if you want an adaptable overdrive, but it may not be the best fit for those seeking a more focused tone.

An excellent surprise

I got this pedal through a trade, without really planning on adding yet another overdrive to my collection—especially one in the Tube Screamer vein. In fact, I didn’t even know Walrus Audio had made this Warhorn, and there aren’t many reviews available online.

First impressions? The graphic design is a bit misleading. Not that it’s ugly, but with that kind of artwork, you’d expect a heavy distortion or a gnarly fuzz rather than a mild overdrive. Even though Walrus marketed it as a mid-gain overdrive, it still feels relatively tame in that department.

As for controls, nothing out of the ordinary: level, gain, bass, and treble. There’s a switch that toggles between two clipping modes—up for symmetrical (Tube Screamer-style), giving a smoother and more compressed sound, and down for asymmetrical (SD-1-style), which is more open and biting.

Plugged into my Fender amp at home, it immediately struck me with its clarity. As long as you keep the gain below 11 o’clock, you only get a slight touch of grit—nothing that qualifies as full-on saturation. One thing to note: you have to push the level past halfway to even reach unity gain, which is unusual for a boutique pedal, as they typically deliver plenty of output even at lower settings. This is especially noticeable in the compressed mode.

Now, so far, I might not be making it sound all that exciting
but here’s why it absolutely deserves 5 stars: the tone is absolutely stunning! Way nicer than my Tube Screamer Mini. It’s more dynamic, more transparent—even in the compressed mode. It’s the ultimate “always on” pedal. Even with humbuckers, the sound remains articulate and clears up beautifully when rolling down the guitar’s volume. And the clean tone? Possibly even better than the clean sound of your amp itself!

Despite its Tube Screamer DNA, it reminds me a bit of the Zvex Box of Rock. I’m completely in love with this pedal, and even if its Viking aesthetic doesn’t quite match the sound it produces, I’d highly recommend it to anyone who comes across one. The closest comparison would probably be the EarthQuaker Devices Plumes, but I don’t remember liking that one nearly as much when I tried it.

It’s a shame Walrus discontinued it
Maybe it struggled to carve out a spot in an already oversaturated overdrive market. Either way, it’s an exceptional pedal—one of the best I’ve ever owned. And I’ve had tons!

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Asymmetric mode, gain at 11 am, level at 1 pm, bass at 10 am and treble just below noon.

Shout out to Walrus Audio Effects for sending over their new Warhorn overdrive ???????? One of my favourite qualities in an OD is its ability to retain note clarity at higher gain levels. I've got the gain up fairly high here and you can still pick apart dense chords, but most importantly, the stringy/twangy nature of the split position I tend to favour in this guitar comes through beautifully. I play a couple of chords on their own and then play along with something I'm working on so you can hear how this kind of tone functions in context. [just realized as I'm captioning this that I coincidentally could have not worn a better shirt today
