Description

The AN200 is a compact table-top physical modeling analog synthesizer and sequencer. The AN200 has sounds like the AN1x keyboard. The sounds are pretty phat, from punchy analog bass to squelchy distorted 303-lines. It models two analog VCO oscillators with sawtooth, variable pulse, mix, multi-saw, OSC Sync, FM, resonant multimode filters and 5 voices of polyphony. To accompany this beastly little synth engine is a 32-voice AWM2 section with about 120 drum and rhythm sounds for creating complete dance grooves, patterns and songs!

The AN200 features a 16 step pattern sequencer with one track for FM sounds and three tracks for AWM2 rhythm sounds. It's simple to use and is suited for hands-on and easy pattern making. Create your patterns in step-mode, in real-time, or record it using an external MIDI keyboard. The sequencer is Analog-Style, each step of a pattern can be tweaked by the turn of a knob, affecting the pitch, gate time or velocity of any synth or drum note. Parts can be dropped out and brought back in on the fly, along with any tweaks and pattern changes for interactive live performances! The "Swing" function can funk up the groove of your patterns for better or worse. There's also Tap Tempo for DJs to match up to their beats! Editing sounds is also fairly easy and hands-on. There are 15 quick access knobs for various common tweakable parameters like the LFO, amp envelopes, filters, effects section and osc. sections. That's way more knobs than the competition (Korg ElecTribe/M and Roland MC-series)! Further in-depth editing can be achieved with the bundled software editor for Mac/PC.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Yamaha AN200.

Build quality

  • The potentiometers on the AN200 can become loose over time but are replaceable if needed.

    Source
  • The main data encoder may fail over time, requiring disassembly to replace, which is manageable but involves taking the AN200 apart.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The AN200 features a 6 operator, 16 voice FM synthesizer engine similar to the DX7s, with a 4-channel, 16-step sequencer.

    Source
  • The AN200 allows for automation recording of up to four knob movements per pattern.

    Source
  • The AN200's sequencer is fun but limited, potentially a benefit for those who prefer simplicity in their workflow.

    Source

  • Editing the AN200 beyond its default capabilities requires sysex control or software editors like Patch Base or MIDI Quest.

    Source
  • The Yamaha Synth Book app includes a free "AN" engine synth, providing additional digital synthesis capabilities for iPad users.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The AN200 can produce digital and 'aliasey' textures when using features like sync, linear FM, and PWM, differentiating it from typical Virtual Analog synths.

    Source
  • The AN200 is essentially an AN1X with fewer voices, offering similar sound quality but at a reduced polyphony.

    Source
  • If seeking an alternative, the Virus series (A, B, C) is recommended for similar applications, offering a broader range of features at varying price points.

    Source
  • The PLG150-AN card used in the AN200 has a Prophet-5 emulation, a feature stemming from Yamaha's ownership of the Sequential Circuits name.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The original cost bracket for the AN200 is estimated around $200-$250, though nostalgia and demand have increased prices significantly.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The AN200's VA synth sound is well-suited for darkpsy music, providing the necessary atmospheric and textured elements for the genre.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's recommended to preemptively order replacement parts for the data encoder from Yamaha to ensure future availability.

TOY STORY?

soundonsound.com

Yamaha's AN200 is a compact yet powerful virtual analogue synth that punches well above its weight, combining synthesis and rhythm in a neat package. With heritage from the AN1x, it offers a robust sound engine and performance-friendly controls. While its effects are somewhat basic and many features require software to access, its expressive capabilities and scene morphing make it a versatile tool for live and studio use. Aimed at those who appreciate a hands-on approach, the AN200 is more than a toy; it's a serious contender in the desktop synth market.
