Critic Reviews

PH-2 Super Phaser Review: and this pedal works well for everything. It thickens the tone... | Boss | Guitar Effects | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

ultimate-guitar.com

The Boss PH-2 Super Phaser is a versatile pedal cherished for its lush, sweeping sounds suitable for various music genres. It excels in delivering thick tones and can even produce chorus-like effects, making it a flexible addition to any pedalboard. Users appreciate its durability and ease of use, with simple controls that offer plenty of sonic exploration. However, some may find the Mode 2 setting a bit too high-pitched and less useful compared to Mode 1. Overall, its reliability and sound quality make it a solid choice for both guitar and synthesizer applications.

Great phaser!¡

...has it's own unique sound especially in mode2 paired with another phaser like a mini Kokko fPh2 all that wild-tricky mu-tron type bi-phase stuff can be easily done with this setup: pretty wild kid's¡!

cwirus88

Weird, odd, but somehow good

When I first got this phaser and put it in fx loop it pretty much sucked. Thin, more flangy than phasery sound made me throw it into drawer. I rediscovered it few months later simply by putting it in front of amp... jackpot!

PH-2 is somehow quite weird on clean channel - do not expect a great warmth and lushness that for example Phase 90 gives; it's more sterile and very tight and that makes PH-2 great for funky stuff. On dirt channel it beats all the phasers on the market - aggressive, punchy, and very distinct.

Since it has four knobs you will need to spend few minutes to dial into desired tone but that only makes it more tweakable so everyone will find something interesing here. Another two advantages: build like tank, dirt cheap (got mine for 20$).

It's SUPER!

Very simple to use, and it has 2 different phase voices. I got it used (of course) and I must say I really liked the sound of it. It doesn't mess with the volume of your guitar (as the Phase 90, which add a little volume on the mid-high frequencies) and you have more control of the sound's shape. Spending some time with it, getting to know how to use all the 4 knobs, and you will be happy with it, for sure.

jasontmays

Just a phase.

I got this item in a trade. I only got it because I'm a huge Mike Einziger fan and I know it's pretty essential to his sound. But It's a cool phaser. I don't really use phasers and I just have it, just to have it.

automaticadam

Great Phase shifting effects and solid Boss toughness

Love my Boss pedals, and this Phaser has been my favorite since the 80s, beating out the Small stone and other competitors again and again

andrew_moran

Love it

I rediscovered this pedal recently and used live is a fantastic addition to your pallette of sound. I prefer it to the more popular phaser out there.

1alaskanassassin

Killer phaser, still kicking after 15 years.

I've had this one a long time, and keep coming back to it because the phaser is just so thick compared to most out there.

jimmarchi1

Is this the boss phaser with different LFO shapes?

1alaskanassassin

@jimmarchi1 that might be the PH-3, PH-2 has 2 modes on the far right, one is more mild, and the other is more "on the nose" if you will, but between the depth and res controls, you can pretty much get as crazy or as mild a phaser as you need.

jimmarchi1

Oh, I know which one this is now. I knew a guy who had one of these way back when. I was more an EHX guy for phasers and flangers back when they were cool.

carsoncoleallen

Great Pedal

Great natural phase. Wide parameters without ruining tone.

dannfeltrin

totally agree!! I had the Phase 90 back in the days and it adds some volume on the mid-high freqs...

antonious_healious

The ultimate

Sounds great, built like a thank, tried a few others, this was the one for me.

And old classic

Nothing to say, just a cool 'vintage' pedal.

Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used mostly the BOSS PH-3 w/ and without expression live since 2016 and on the 2017 album. He has been seen using both the TC Electronic Helix Phaser and the BOSS PH-3 side by side live in late 2017-2018. Recently though Luke has been using an old school BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser on some 2019 recordings and has been seen bringing it onto live boards in 2019. In the 2006-2009 Positive Mental Trip live band era Luke used an EHX Small Stone Phaser which Steve Repka still uses when he plays with PMT live. Positive Mental Trip has been experimenting with the MOOG 12 stage phaser sounds on electronic drums, bass, vocals, acoustic guitars and electric guitars in the studio but will most likely not be using anything but the BOSS PH-2, PH-3 and TC Electronic Helix Phaser to re-create the MOOG sounds live.
