Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Catalinbread Katzenkonig.

Features and functionality

  • The gain knob controls the tone bender part of the circuit, while the input knob affects the rat section, offering versatility in tone shaping.

    Source
  • Lowering the gain significantly on the Katzenkönig reduces noise while maintaining a grungy, overdriven sound, highlighting its flexibility in tone control.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Catalinbread Blood Donor is a cleaner, less noisy version of the Katzenkonig, addressing noise issues reported by some users.

    Source
  • While similar to a RAT pedal, users suggest it may not perfectly replicate a tone bender's sound but gets close.

    Source
  • Aion Deimos offers a quieter alternative, though it may slightly lack in low-end frequencies compared to the Katzenkonig.

    Source
  • Despite noise concerns, the core RAT and Tone Bender blend remains consistent between the Katzenkönig and Blood Donor, appealing to those seeking this specific sound fusion.

    Source

User experience

  • The pedal is notably noisy, which some users find problematic for board use, though it may be less noticeable in a band setting.

    Source
  • Owners frequently report a high noise floor, significantly impacting its usability in quieter settings.

    Source
  • The Katzenkönig stacks well with other gain pedals, offering multiple sweet spots for tonal exploration and integration into complex setups.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Turning both gain and input knobs to maximum yields what some consider the best sound, with a mix of distortion and fuzz.

    Source
  • The pedal is seen as a versatile fusion of Tone Bender MKII and Rat, appealing to those seeking a unique sound blend.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Replacing internal trimmers can improve sound, but mishandling during modding, like reflowing solder joints, risks damaging the pedal.

All hail the king of cats!

This is an insane and absolutely unique pedal combining a Tonebender MkII and an oldschool rat in one pedal. Great for 70s rock but also for punkrock and stoner/doom. I got it quiet cheap and I very much love this pedal.

vakaaa

Katzenkönig

It's a great sounding pedal somewhere between fuzz and distortion. It tends to hiss a little though.

florian_tennstedt

That's what cats do occasionally ;-)
