EarthQuaker Special Cranker Overdrive Pedal Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

EarthQuaker Devices' Special Cranker showcases an impressive medium-gain overdrive that brilliantly maintains the integrity of your core tone, enhancing it with articulate snarl and sustain. The dual diode options—germanium and silicon—offer distinct tonal flavors, though the germanium side may feel a bit underwhelming for high-gain enthusiasts. With a price point of $99, this pedal delivers warmth and versatility that make it a fantastic value. However, the lack of a blend control for the diodes may leave some players wanting more. Overall, it’s a compelling choice for those seeking a nuanced overdrive experience.

EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker shines as a versatile overdrive pedal that enhances your amp's natural tone without overshadowing it. Its touch-sensitive drive and dual diode options (Germanium and Silicon) provide a range of sonic textures, ensuring it caters to both subtle boosts and crunchy power. The clever Flexi-Switch technology adds practical flexibility for live settings. However, while the pedal excels in many areas, some players may find the "More" knob's crackling sound a bit distracting when pushed to its limits. Overall, it's a highly effective tool for tone sculpting that every guitarist should consider.

positive

EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker Review | GuitarPlayer

guitarplayer.com

EarthQuaker Devices' Special Cranker delivers a versatile medium-gain overdrive that feels intimately connected to your amp. Its touch-sensitive dynamics and dual diode options (silicon for brightness, germanium for warmth) enhance your tone without overwhelming it. However, players accustomed to higher-gain settings might find the germanium mode a bit too tame. Overall, this pedal shines for those seeking subtle saturation and harmonic richness, making it a worthy addition for musicians looking to elevate their sound without straying too far from their amp's natural character.

EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker review: Your new favourite tone-sweetening crunch machine?

guitar.com

The EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker redefines overdrive with a touch-sensitive, amp-like feel that stands out in a crowded market. Its three controls offer impressive versatility, allowing players to dial in a rich, medium-gain crunch that maintains tonal integrity. However, the unsightly color scheme and the limited appeal of germanium clipping may leave some wanting. While it excels in delivering nuanced dynamics, those not enamored with its aesthetic or seeking dramatic tonal shifts might find it lacking. Overall, it's a solid choice for tone enthusiasts, but not without its quirks.

The pedal that makes everything come alive

The Earthquaker Devices Special Cranker is marketed as a preamp, but in reality, it’s more of a dirt/boost pedal. It features three knobs — Level, Tone, and More. The More knob adjusts the bias of the transistor. I don’t fully grasp the technical side of that, but in practice, the further you turn it up, the grittier and fuzzier it gets. There’s also a switch that lets you toggle between germanium and silicon transistors. Germanium sounds a bit smoother, while silicon offers more bass and overall volume. Personally, I prefer the germanium side when the More knob is past 1 o’clock, and the silicon side for lower gain settings. The Tone control works best on the brighter side — the pedal isn’t inherently bright, so you can safely push it up a bit. What I love most about this pedal is that it’s not a clone of anything. It simply gives you your clean tone, but dirtier. I don’t know what “transparent” really means — every dirt pedal colors your sound in some way — but the Special Cranker feels very respectful of your clean signal. It somehow makes everything you play feel more alive. Effects placed before or after it sound punchier, clearer, and better. It stacks beautifully with any other drive I pair it with, and it absolutely loves my fuzz, the Caroline Hawaiian Pizza, when placed in front. So far, it’s my favorite overdrive pedal, and I’ve had quite a few.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Silicon side. Volume at 10:00, Tone at 2:30 , More at 11:00.

Brilliant, available, and affordable

This is a brilliant, available, and affordable overdrive/distortion pedal. The silicon and germanium modes are two distinct characters which make this very versatile for any rig.

yusufgurfidan

It's even fuzzier when you increase the "more" button up!

That's your one-size-fits-all in overdrive pedals. Absolutely not like green OD but it has some modern, doomy sounds

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Turn your "more" button up

A great low-gain Overdrive

This is the best $99 I ever spent. It gives you a nice, low-gain overdrive that's perfect for applications where you want some of the clean tone to persist. It's excellent with single-coil pickups and does just as well with humbuckers. It's also nice on bass. It drives other overdrive pedals well, too.
