Features and functionality

  • The P-90 pickups are praised for their versatility, excelling in both distorted and clean tones, providing a different experience than humbuckers.

  • Some units have inconsistent fret leveling, with occasional high frets noted; polishing is recommended for optimal playability.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners frequently replace stock P-90 pickups, preferring vintage wind Lollars for enhanced tonal quality.

    Source
  • Replacing the zinc hardware, including the wraparound bridge, with steel or aluminum is recommended to enhance tonal clarity and sustain.

Critic Reviews

theGUITARaddict: Review: Epiphone SG Special P-90

theguitaraddict.blogspot.com

The Epiphone SG Special P-90 offers a commendable nod to its Gibson counterpart, boasting solid construction and impressive P-90 tone. However, it stumbles with stiff tuners and minor quality control issues, like an improperly installed bridge insert. While its playability shines, the neck dive can be a nuisance, and high action on the treble side might frustrate some players. Overall, it represents good value for money, but potential buyers should be prepared for some quirks. If you're seeking a budget-friendly SG experience without the Gibson badge, this model is worth considering—just approach with a discerning eye.

Epiphone SG Special P-90 review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

A stunning entry point into the SG family, the Epiphone SG Special P-90 delivers classic rock tones and a gorgeous finish at an appealing price. While the P-90 pickups offer rich, vintage sound, the lightning wraparound bridge can frustrate those focused on intonation. A minor buzz and a slight neck adjustment might be necessary, but overall, this guitar is a fantastic choice for players seeking quality and affordability without sacrificing style.

Lovely workhorse

Lovely workhorse guitar, I've got the green one. It's really quite great, and simple so its easy to modify. Weighs surprisingly less than Gibsons of the same style.

Unbelievable!

Picked this up from the Gibson Garage in Nashville and could not be more impressed! Every detail of this guitar is just phenomenal and stands up incredibly well to it's Gibson counterpart
