Description

The inspiration for the Fantome Tiger comes from the legendary Electra Distortion. Electra was a Japanese brand of budget guitars distributed in the U.S. during the 1970s (yes, it’s the same brand behind James Hetfield’s famous white Flying V from Metallica’s early days). They also offered a range of very simple pedals with surprisingly pleasing tones—among them, the Distortion, a hard-clipping single-transistor circuit known for its raw, aggressive sound. This circuit has since become a DIY and boutique classic, inspiring pedals such as the Earthquaker Devices Speaker Cranker, the Greer Ghetto Stomp, and the Lovepedal Woodrow—each with its own distinct voice, proving just how much a few component changes can transform a simple design. The Fantome Tiger replaces the germanium diodes with asymmetric clipping, resulting in a massive tone. This French overdrive borders on fuzz territory with its gritty character, reminiscent of a cranked tweed Champ. Placed first in your signal chain, it responds beautifully to volume-knob adjustments. There’s only one control—volume—but that’s more than enough to unleash its full power. The Roar switch lets the Fantome Tiger truly growl by removing the filter. In its normal position, the filter tames the highs to smooth out aggressiveness, while in Roar mode, it brings back all the bite, teeth out and gain maxed, for a sound that definitely isn’t aimed at John Mayer fans. In a world full of polite three-knob overdrives, the Fantome Tiger brings a breath of fresh air with its simple, mean, and uncompromising design.

A simple, no nonsense, boost/OD

Fantome FX is a company that builds drive and fuzz pedals known for their great-looking designs, their choice of components (NOS transistors from Eastern Europe or Russia), and their gritty, very aggressive tones. This pedal couldn’t be simpler: it’s a boost/drive built around a single hard-clipping transistor. It has one volume knob and a “roar” switch that either rolls off some highs or leaves the signal wide open. The pedal sounds best with the roar engaged and the volume around noon. For a fatter, more compressed sound, set the volume to about 2 o’clock. So basically, you get two perfectly usable tones, either of which you could easily leave on all the time. As the owner of an EarthQuaker Special Cranker, I was looking for something in the same spirit but dirtier and more distinctive. That’s exactly what this delivers, and it’s become my main overdrive. The only downside is the lack of EQ control—but honestly, why complicate things? I plug it in, it sounds great, it cuts through the mix, it gets the job done. What more do you need?
