Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Keeley Tone Workstation.

Features and functionality

  • The 1962 drive can sound muddy with humbuckers, but pairs well with single coils for a brighter tone.

    Source
  • The modded TS channel may become brittle with gain above moderate levels, making it less versatile for high-gain needs.

    Source
  • The Tone Workstation combines a compressor, boost, and modded tube screamer, but lacks the ability to reorder effects, limiting customization.

    Source
  • The pedal offers a modded 808 tube screamer (Keeley Red Dirt), a Katana clean boost/overdrive, and a Keeley Compressor Plus, providing versatile sound options.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Keeley Tone Workstation's 1962 drive has been unfavorably compared to Keeley's Blues Driver and Oxblood for its limited stacking capability.

    Source
  • The Katana boost within the Tone Workstation is praised for its clean quality, distinguishing it from noisier boost pedals.

    Source
  • Users with setups including Keeley Compressor Plus, EP Booster, and SparkleDrive find the Tone Workstation covers similar ground efficiently.

    Source

User experience

  • The compact design results in closely spaced foot switches, which may be a concern for users with larger feet or precision needs.

    Source
  • Some users find the drive sounds to be nasal and muffled, which can be subjective based on personal taste and gear pairing.

    Source
  • Some users find the Tone Workstation's packaging effective for limited space setups, as it consolidates multiple effects into a single compact unit.

    Source
  • Owners note that the pedal's bypass is not noiseless, with the compressor being particularly loud when engaged.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for quick, impromptu gigs due to its versatile range of included effects, making it a grab-and-go solution.

    Source
  • Owners often use the Tone Workstation alongside a tuner, EQ, and looper for a compact, versatile setup ideal for home practice.

    Source
  • Paired with a Supro Black Magick Reverb 25W combo, the pedal produces a notably 'nasty' sound, catering well to hard rock styles.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Purchasing the Tone Workstation used can be more cost-effective than acquiring individual drive pedals, offering significant value for those new to compression and overdrive.

Critic Reviews

Keeley Tone Workstation review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Keeley Tone Workstation is a compact, budget-friendly multi-pedal offering a compressor, boost, and overdrive. Its practicality shines with its space-saving design and cost efficiency, making it a great choice for players seeking multiple effects without cluttering their pedalboard. The compressor includes a Blend knob for subtle compression control, while the overdrives provide both vintage and modern tones. However, the pedal lacks alternative routing options, which may limit flexibility for some users. Overall, it's a solid choice for those looking for versatility and value in a single unit.

The best of Keeley in one space-saving box. Good enough to replace some heavyweights.

Every single circuit crammed into this box are among the best of their kind, and they interact wonderfully with each other. I've also had the chance to A/B it with similar separate units.

I keep the Red Dirt channel, in Mod+ mode, stacks up well against the best TS-types I've played. It packs a lot more gain than your standard green overdrive, while sounding just as sweet. I find the Baked mode a little too over the top for my needs, but it's there if you need even more gain and volume.

The 1962 is literally a Bluesbreaker circuit within a Katana circuit, which may be one reason why you can only select one of these two at a time. The Katana boost does what it should. The 1962, however, is my new favorite Bluesbreaker for its standout gain range. It's nice and chimey at low gain settings, similar to my Jan Ray clone at low saturation. And in the higher gain settings, it's that searing JTM 45 distortion. I'd take this over an OCD any day.

The compressor, as far as I know, is their famous 2-knob design with an added blend control and tone switch. This and the Wampler Ego are the most similar compressors I've tried – and my most favorite ones too. I like what it does to both clean and dirty tones. Its noise floor, while tolerable, is a bit higher than the drive channels in this unit. The noise is also noticeably higher than the Wampler Ego I've A/B-ed it with.

Overall, I'm a big fan of this pedal. It's probably one of the best gain pedals I've ever come across. The buttons are quite crowded, but with a couple switch toppers, it shouldn't be a bother. I also like the relative straightforwardness in its layout – 3 knobs + a 2-way toggle per channel, and no feature overload = no fumbling and confusion.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Compressor in Stock mode, everything @1:00; 1962 mode, Level = 1:00, Tone = 1:00, Drive = 10:30; Red Dirt in Mod+ mode, Drive = 8:30, Level = 2:00, Tone = 12:00

Great sound and compact.

Love the tones. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to switch the direction of the signal. That's me being picky though.

Best gain combo

If you are playing out and can only bring one stompbox with you, this is it.
