The best of Keeley in one space-saving box. Good enough to replace some heavyweights.
Every single circuit crammed into this box are among the best of their kind, and they interact wonderfully with each other. I've also had the chance to A/B it with similar separate units.
I keep the Red Dirt channel, in Mod+ mode, stacks up well against the best TS-types I've played. It packs a lot more gain than your standard green overdrive, while sounding just as sweet. I find the Baked mode a little too over the top for my needs, but it's there if you need even more gain and volume.
The 1962 is literally a Bluesbreaker circuit within a Katana circuit, which may be one reason why you can only select one of these two at a time. The Katana boost does what it should. The 1962, however, is my new favorite Bluesbreaker for its standout gain range. It's nice and chimey at low gain settings, similar to my Jan Ray clone at low saturation. And in the higher gain settings, it's that searing JTM 45 distortion. I'd take this over an OCD any day.
The compressor, as far as I know, is their famous 2-knob design with an added blend control and tone switch. This and the Wampler Ego are the most similar compressors I've tried – and my most favorite ones too. I like what it does to both clean and dirty tones. Its noise floor, while tolerable, is a bit higher than the drive channels in this unit. The noise is also noticeably higher than the Wampler Ego I've A/B-ed it with.
Overall, I'm a big fan of this pedal. It's probably one of the best gain pedals I've ever come across. The buttons are quite crowded, but with a couple switch toppers, it shouldn't be a bother. I also like the relative straightforwardness in its layout – 3 knobs + a 2-way toggle per channel, and no feature overload = no fumbling and confusion.
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Compressor in Stock mode, everything @1:00; 1962 mode, Level = 1:00, Tone = 1:00, Drive = 10:30; Red Dirt in Mod+ mode, Drive = 8:30, Level = 2:00, Tone = 12:00
