Marshall Vintage/Modern 2266C Combo Review | Guitar Jar

guitarjar.co.uk

The Marshall Vintage Modern 50W Combo is a sonic powerhouse, offering the classic Marshall overdrive with a versatile tonal range. Its unique "body" and "detail" controls allow for intricate sound sculpting, akin to blending channels on a classic plexi amp. While the single-channel design may confuse newcomers expecting seamless channel switching, its true strength lies in harnessing guitar volume for dynamic control. The Celestion Greenback speakers shine in a band setting, though might be too bright at home. Despite a learning curve, this amp is a revelation for those willing to master its nuances. A reliable, quality piece of gear for those seeking to move beyond pedal dependency.

Marshall Vintage Modern 2266C Combo review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Marshall Vintage Modern 50W Combo is a nod to the iconic '60s Marshall tones, wrapped in a sturdy, stylish package. It excels with its classic Marshall sound and robust build, featuring cool aesthetics and a reliable design. However, its digital reverb leaves room for improvement. This amp is perfect for guitarists who appreciate driving tone from their instrument, offering dynamic range and preserving the guitar's character. Despite some minor drawbacks, it’s a rewarding choice for those who cherish vintage tones with modern reliability.

Superb road worthy Marshall combo

I owned this amp as soon as it was released in 2007. It was my main amp until I was forced to retire it in 2016, 9 years of relentless use and lots of miles on the road, my tech found a fault (owing to wear and tear) that he said was a risk of electric shock. So I sold it as spares. The buyer only wanted it for the G12 greenback speakers and at the time, I didn't have the funds to replace it.

Not easy to find a decent condition used one as they were discontinued in 2013.

However, a friend of mine had a showroom condition example he let me buy from him.

The VM 2266c is a superb amp that delivers the famous 1960's Bluesbreaker tones. Whilst it will accommodate pedals with ease (FX loop is top notch), it is best when the guitar volume pot is used to control the amount of overdrive. Very much a plug in and play amplifier.

There are only two down points for me: It is very heavy and although it has carry handles on the sides, it is a back breaker if you are constantly moving it around. The digital reverb is not brilliant and I recommend using a reverb pedal.

Having got my hands on this amp again I am keeping it for home studio use exclusively.

Personally I use the hi dynamic range, which cleans up very nicely when you roll off the volume on the guitar.

Another big plus is that you can unplug the speakers with zero effort and use the amp with any other cab of choice or you can use any amp head with the VM's Greenback speakers, which is a great asset for any studio musician.
