And She Got A Pistol, Laying It Down On Me And She Said "Shoot, shoot"

I bought one of these new in 1995 for about $300 US. It gives you a (True) bypass, then a choice of clean/Blues or Blues/Solo; the Blues being a subtly grindy overdrive and the Solo a full on high gain sound. All of it coming from 2 12ax7's which you can switch out for tonal color more to your taste if you like-I put in NOS Sylvania 12au7's. Every sound coming from this pedal is sparkly and shines with rich harmonics and sweet topend, and the distortion is always rich and musical. Life choices wound up with me quitting guitar-and eventually a ton of other things- and so I didn't use it for awhile. When I picked up the guitar again I went through a ton of different OD/Preamps- Tube Screamers, MXR, a Chandler, and settled on an AMT SS-20. I had loaned my V-Twin to a pal, and when I got it back and plugged it in : Effin MAGIC !!! So I bought one off eBay in 2009 for $300...

One Of A Kind

These are now discontinued & other than a similarly styled Hughes & Kettner tube pedal was I believe the only tube-based pedal that I was at least aware of for awhile. It sure cost a lot a the time & it weighs a ton. It's a got green, red & blue LED's for clean, solo & blues settings respectively.

I'm not a metal guy, so I wasn't after a MESA tone, but I do value it as a pre-amp to warm & help sculpt my clean tone as it has some cool knobs for dialling in bass, middle & treble. Obviously it offers some pretty scorching high-gain sound if that's what I'm after too.

I'm not sure that i'm getting as much out of this pedal as other's might & I have strongly considered selling it several times but have held off from doing so for some reason. It's unique & I figured i regret it so while may not be a permanent fixture in my chain at the moment it could easily work it's way back in in the not too distant future. After all it has been called one of the most indispensable pedals of all time so... ;)

I bought this V-Twin pedal in 2000. Dunno if the Hotbox was about at the time but I i didn't have the internet then. ;) The Blackbird & Firebottle from Effectrode look like sweet tube-based pedal options available these days though.

oh yeah, the effectrode in the green housing is pretty flattering to most guitars for most genres and really loves fender amps... forget which model it is but I like it

Fantastic valve tone with any amp.

A great bit of kit for high and moderate gain tones, you can run it (as I do) in like with other pedals into the front for your amp or use it as you main preamp connected to a power amp of straight to a mixer or head phones. The V-Twin has three channels as well as a bypass option, these are Clean, Blues and Solo. The clean option allowing you to add valve warmth to your clean tone, the Blues and Solo setting deal with the dirty stuff. for the most part the Blues channel could probably cover most situations as it produces a fair amount of gain on it's own, click into Solo mode and the gain level goes up quite a few notches, combined with the very powerful EQ can add classic mesa tone to any amp.

The main disadvantage is that all three sound rely on the same EQ controls meaning if you want to utilise all the tones, some compromise is called for, however I believe the rack version allows more flexibility. I use it in line with other pedals as my main overdrive using either the blues of solo setting as the situation requires. The sound of this pedal is huge and puts many other pedals to shame.
