Critic Reviews

Moog Rogue | Vintage Synth Explorer

vintagesynth.com

The Moog Rogue, while having authentic Moog components, feels like a cost-cut version of its siblings, offering limited sound design flexibility with just two waveforms per oscillator that must match. Its single envelope generator is shared between the filter and amp, further restricting sonic possibilities. Despite these limitations, the Rogue's Moog filter and external audio input keep it relevant for entry-level users and experimental sound seekers. The design's simplicity even led to a licensed version by Radioshack, which offers more features for less money. While the Rogue is compact and user-friendly, its scaled-down nature compared to the Prodigy and Minimoog makes it more of a budget-friendly choice for those seeking genuine Moog bass on a tight budget.

Moog Source and Moog Rogue (EMM May 82)

muzines.co.uk

The Moog Rogue is a budget-friendly synthesizer that delivers a robust, brassy sound, perfect for non-professional musicians. Priced at £318, it offers dual oscillators with shared controls, which can be a limitation. The build includes a basic power supply setup, which might be cumbersome for stage use. Despite its simplicity, it boasts useful features like oscillator synchronization and a 24dB/octave filter, albeit with a harsher tone than typical Moog synthesizers. While the lack of separate controls for oscillators is a downside, its accessible design and strong sound make it a commendable entry-level synth.

Great little synth, price is going up

This used to be the "cheap Moog" but it was just undervalued for so long. Mean leads and basses. I had to make special cables to use it with the Kenton Pro Solo. The ends that connect to the synth are TRS 1/4 inch but not all leads will be used. Use 1/8 inch tip to TRS 1/4 inch tip and sleeve to sleeve for the gate. Use 1/8 inch tip to TRS 1/4 inch ring and sleeve to sleeve for the CV.

It's a Moog

Solid Moog bass and filters. Not much else to speak of.

Raw, dirty analogue

Great bass and lead monosynth. Can sound dirty too, which is hard to get from newer gear.

I miss my radio shack branded rogue, but it had issues I couldn't fix... nice find!

Used by Jonny in studio. He played it during the March 1998 attempt at recording Big Boots. Some say that Thom or Jonny used the synth quite a lot during the Kid A/Amnesiac sessions, though I don’t know if those sounds are actually from the Rogue. It has also been mistakenly claimed to have been used on 2+2=5, when the synth used on that song is quite probably the Martenot.

You can’t reproduce that sort of stuff with plugins. There’s dirt and grit and they sound alive." This statement highlights the artist's preference for the unique sound quality of vintage equipment over digital reproductions.

"I played keyboard bass whenever we were writing just to get things moving fast, because it can take forever to get a bass guitar sound. I'd then replace the keyboard parts after everything else had gone on, because bass strings cut through so great. In addition to the Prophet, I have a little Moog Rogue I used in the Stop Making Sense movie. These analog instruments sound a lot fatter, but I like the fat, funky sound of a real instrument.”"
