Moog Minimoog Voyager XL

soundonsound.com

The Moog Minimoog Voyager XL is a seductive piece of synthesizer craftsmanship, exuding vintage allure reminiscent of the 1970s. This semi-modular beast boasts extensive CV routing, a five-octave keyboard, and a ribbon controller, which enhance its versatility. Despite its hefty price tag and weight, its sound is undeniably rich, offering creamy leads and powerful basses. While it lacks some modern features like esoteric filters or sequencers, its charm lies in its classic Moog sound and aesthetic appeal. Ideal for those who prioritize beauty and sonic excellence over practicality.

Its rich, iconic Moog sound and extensive patch panel make it a sound designer's paradise. This is without any doubt my favorite synthesizer.

I get so creative with this thing. I love using it combined with plugins to add lush delays and reverbs to the sound. This is without any doubt my favorite synthesizer. It is incredibly versatile. You can get abstract sounds such as ocean waves to the fattest mono leads you will ever hear. I use it a lot within logic with the external instrument plugin, however, recently I have been getting into making a cool voyager patch, recording middle c for a few bars (around 8-10 bars usually, if it is a sustaining sound, I mostly do this for leads so it usually is) and I bring it into kontakt and use the time and pitch algorithms to make my voyager polyphonic.

jc3music

One of the best Moogs every made.

The swiss army knife of synths. There is no fatter sound from any other 3 oscillators mono synth.

In this 2021 Music Radar article, Nick discusses using the Voyager on Die Young:

“Amelia wrote this at our friend’s studio, and we were trying to sketch it out. At this place, they had this absolutely insane Moog Voyager XL. Which was the kind of thing that - especially back then - we would never have access to this giant, beautiful instrument.

“Right away she came in and I wrote that bassline, the main riff of the song, using that. Because we were sitting with that, that part became that classic, Moog-y, almost Hornsby sound, with one oscillator tuned to the root and one tuned to the fifth above. There’s no way that song would have happened that way, had that thing not been sitting there.

“It’s actually funny, too, because we were recording it, assuming we were just recording the demo. Because the waveforms I was using were so simple, it’s literally a triangle wave and a sawtooth. I thought, I’ll just remake this on something else, make it tight and play it better and all that stuff. But we couldn’t beat the sound of it with anything else. It was one of those things where it’s like, it’s a triangle wave, how can it be that different? It was so frustrating - we finally had to borrow someone’s Voyager and redo it.”
