FAQs

What makes the Red Panda Tensor different from other delay pedals?

The Red Panda Tensor offers unique features like real-time pitch shifting and time stretching, allowing for creative manipulation of audio in ways typical delay pedals do not. It includes modes for reverse, tape stop, and pitch shifting, providing a wide range of experimental sound possibilities.

Does the Red Panda Tensor work well with both guitar and bass?

Yes, the Red Panda Tensor is designed to handle a wide frequency range, making it suitable for both guitar and bass. Its pitch shifting and time manipulation capabilities can be creatively used with either instrument.

Can the Red Panda Tensor be controlled via MIDI?

Yes, the Red Panda Tensor features MIDI connectivity, allowing you to control its parameters and switch presets using a MIDI controller, which adds versatility for live performances or studio work.

Is the Red Panda Tensor stereo or mono?

The Red Panda Tensor is a stereo pedal, which means it can process stereo signals and create expansive soundscapes, making it ideal for complex audio routing and immersive effects.

Does the Red Panda Tensor require a specific power supply?

The Red Panda Tensor does not operate on batteries and requires an external power supply, which is not included. It is recommended to use a standard 9V DC power supply with at least 250mA current for optimal performance.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Red Panda Tensor.

Features and functionality

  • Tensor's NXT mode allows overdubbing reverse phrases for unique tape manipulation effects, but some users find the 4.8-second Hold capture limiting.

    Source
  • The Random knob is highlighted as a "secret sauce," offering unique effects without the need for looping, enhancing creative sound experimentation.

    Source
  • Tensor's loop decay setting in the web app allows loops to become quieter over time, offering a pseudo-feedback effect in the absence of a traditional feedback knob.

    Source
  • Without an expression pedal, achieving tape stop effects can be challenging, as these effects typically rely on real-time modulation.

    Source
  • The Tensor V2 offers stereo capability or a doubled loop length of 9 seconds, but it cannot support both simultaneously.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Tensor excels at real-time tape stops, reverse playback, and glitch effects; users often shift it within the signal chain to leverage different features.

    Source
  • The Tensor's Drift mode offers momentary capabilities that emulate a tape machine, appealing to users seeking spontaneous sound manipulation.

    Source
  • The Tensor acts as a "musical elf" or sidekick, adding semi-random, pitch-shifted reverse textures that can stay in tune with the player's performance.

    Source
  • The Tensor can be integrated into a wet/dry/wet setup with the blend control adjusted accordingly, allowing it to be used alongside other effects like delay and reverb for richer soundscapes.

    Source

Comparisons

  • While both Tensor and Chase Bliss Mood handle reverse tape effects, the Tensor offers more control and a superior reverse delay, though the Mood's feature set is broader.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners describe a slight delay with 100% wet reverse effects, requiring a bit of dry signal for coherent play, which may affect timing-sensitive users.

    Source
  • Some users find the Tensor to be more of a standalone instrument rather than a typical effect pedal, requiring active engagement and manipulation during play.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Updating to the latest firmware increases the loop buffer from 4.8 to 10 seconds, providing extended looping capability for more complex compositions.

    Source
  • Different firmware files exist for V1 and V2, and users must ensure they download the correct version from Red Panda's site.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • V1 users can upgrade to V2 features with a stereo upgrade board, but this requires replacing internal hardware if the unit is old enough.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Buying a used Tensor requires checking serial numbers; post-108-066999 units have the new board, affecting resale value and capabilities.

Critic Reviews

Red Panda Tensor

soundonsound.com

The Red Panda Tensor is a creative powerhouse, channeling the allure of open-reel tape with modern versatility. This pedal excels in delivering tape-like pitch and speed shifts, inspiring musicians with its unique looping effects. While its deep functionality demands a thorough manual read, the intuitive design makes it a rewarding tool for experimentation. However, potential buyers should be ready for its quirks, such as occasional clicks during time compression, which are part of its charm. Despite the learning curve, the Tensor stands as a versatile, inspiring choice for musicians seeking more than a typical looper.

One of the most unique pedals, but with a major issue

The Tensor pedal is a great piece of gear that can generate crazy and original ideas. It also has some functions that can replicate pedals like the Whammy (when using an expression pedal to change the pitch). The repeats sound great, and it can get really loud if you want it to, even with the reverse mode activated. The cover design is impressive, making the pedal look more expensive than it actually is.

However, the big issue is that this pedal is goddamn small (and I mean very small), which makes it uncomfortable to use. The way you can drop glitchy, insane sounds is great, but the problem is that the small size makes it easy to accidentally hit the wrong switch. For example, you might press the switch that stops the sound instead of triggering the glitch effects, or vice versa, all because the two switches are placed too close to each other.

Also, the jack inputs are placed very close together. Somehow, the expression input is located right between the input and output jacks, making it really difficult to connect an expression pedal using an L-shaped cable. If you have this pedal on a crowded pedalboard, this can be a major hassle.

In conclusion, this pedal offers an extensive and creative experience, and I highly recommend it for what it is. However, the enclosure design could definitely be improved.
