Description

Meet your synthesis powerhouse - the Roland JD-XA Analog/Digital Crossover Synthesizer. This crossover synth harmoniously unites the warmth of analog with the versatility of digital, merging into one innovative, no-compromise instrument.

Whether you're a sound designer, a studio producer or a live performer, the JD-XA provides an incredibly flexible platform for all. Use the analog and digital parts side by side, stack them up for sonic devastation, or shape digital waveforms via the analog filters to create sounds you've never heard before.

This synth houses a four-part analog engine with true analog filters and a direct dry output. Each part has two oscillifiers, filter and amp sections, and four envelopes, all with incredibly fast attack and response times. You also get two LFOs, with coverage from ultra-slow to ultra-fast.

Equally impressive is its four-part digital engine, powered by Roland's SuperNATURAL synth technology. It's compatible with the synth engine from the INTEGRA-7 sound module, a favorite of top producers and sound designers.

What sets the JD-XA apart is the creative interaction between its analog and digital engines. Its distinctive crossover design allows you to blend the engines together or use them independently, thus giving you two synths in one.

Key Features:

  • Advanced synthesizer with independent analog and digital sound engines
  • Analog filter section with 4-Pole, transistor-ladder, and multi-mode filters
  • SuperNATURAL synth technology digital engine
  • 16-track pattern sequencer for fast creation of songs and loops
  • Comprehensive effects with MFX for all parts plus five system effects
  • USB, MIDI, and CV/GATE interfaces for seamless integration with DAWs
  • Mic input for modulation of synth sounds and vocoder functionality
  • Backlit knobs, sliders, and controllers for hands-on sound shaping
  • Analog dry out for raw signal output
  • Compatible with INTEGRA-7 sound libraries from Roland's online Axial sound portal

  • The JD-XA offers more flexibility with its 8-part multitimbral capability, whereas the System-8 is limited to 2-part multitimbrality, making JD-XA more versatile for complex compositions.

    Source
  • The JD-XA is noted for sounding better straight out of the box compared to the Hydrasynth and Iridium, making it easier to program layered sounds.

    Source
  • The JD-XA's digital FM engine offers versatility when compared to other synths that lack this feature, like the Nord Lead, enhancing its appeal for diverse sound requirements.

    Source

Features and functionality

Critic Reviews

Roland JDXA

soundonsound.com

Roland's JD-XA synthesizer is an innovative blend of analog and digital technology, offering a hands-on experience with a comprehensive control panel and robust effects. Its analog voices and varied filters deliver impressive sound quality, while the digital section provides versatility. The instrument's 16-track sequencer and ability to interface with external gear, including CV/Gate, add to its appeal. However, its plastic construction and external power supply may disappoint some users, and the sequencer's limitations could frustrate those seeking more flexibility. Overall, the JD-XA is a standout hybrid synthesizer that rewards dedication and creativity.

Roland JD-XA Synth review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Roland JD-XA Analog/Digital Crossover Synthesizer impresses with its versatile blend of analog and digital engines, offering unique soundscapes. The backlit front panel is a boon for real-time control, though it may attract fingerprints and glare. While the four-octave keyboard might limit some, the synth's portability and sturdy build are commendable. Its dual engines produce lush analog tones and rich digital layers, though menu navigation could be streamlined with a jog wheel. Overall, the JD-XA stands out as an inspiring and innovative instrument, despite some minor design quirks.

Roland JD-XA - JD of the 21st Century? - GreatSynthesizers

greatsynthesizers.com

The Roland JD-XA Synthesizer, touted as a 21st-century powerhouse, offers a mix of analog and digital sound potential that impresses with its SuperNATURAL samples and versatile sound design options. However, its brilliance is dimmed by notable flaws: a short keyboard with awkward velocity response, a reflective plastic build that quickly shows wear, and a poorly designed user manual. The sequencer lacks transposition options, a surprising oversight for an otherwise feature-packed instrument. While the digital section excels, the analog segment underwhelms with inconsistent filters and noise issues. A promising tool for creative soundscapes, but not without its frustrations.

All the hardware synth I will ever need.

This synth has every feature you can think of and more, including top-quality vocoder, direct-to-digital recording over USB, built-in low-latency USB ASIO audio interface - perfect for softsynths, 16-track/128-step sequencer and aftertouch. The only items lacking are analog polyphony (6 voices - 2 more - would have made a big difference) and keys - a synth with this level of power, especially with its split functionality, really deserves 61 keys, although of course these would have made it even more expensive. Digital voices can substitute adequately when analog voices run out, and a larger MIDI keyboard can be plugged in as necessary.

In talking about his song "Too Long" (in this article: https://www.self-titledmag.com/cid-rim-feature-songs-of-vienna-album/) he says "At the end of the mixing session for Denai, the studio manager came in with this massive monster of a new Roland synth called JD-XA. Just knobs and blinking stuff everywhere, and it took me a while to just strip everything back to one good square wave and a filter. Then I recorded this bass pattern that’s always the same note in different octaves and layered it with a couple of bass sounds and synth lines in the upper registers."
