Critic Reviews

Roland XP80

soundonsound.com

The Roland XP-80 synthesizer impresses with its expansive sound palette, 64-note polyphony, and robust sequencer, making it a powerhouse for live and studio use. Its 60,000-note sequencer, arpeggiator, and phrase sequencer are boon for performers seeking a complete "band in a box." While it boasts excellent effects and a vast range of sounds, the XP-80 falls short with a lightweight keyboard action that may not suit all and a sequencer resolution of only 96ppqn, which might deter serious sequencer users. Despite this, the XP-80 remains a compelling choice for its quality sounds and expansion capabilities.

Great all-around 90s workstation

The Roland XP80 still one of my favourite workstation. Easy to use sequencer, great range of PCM sounds. It has the typical 90s sound (if not counting the expansions).

Preferred Settings + Usage:

I have the following extensions inside: Dance, Hip-hop, Vintage, Experience01.

Big brother of the XP50!

This board has some really great sounds! If you like darkwave, goth, ambient music you will love the sounds on this synth. Some are just other-wordly! Its a lot easier to sequence than the XP50. And alot of fun to play!

Nice keybed

The keys are great. Im not a diehard fan for Xp/Jv sounds (except Jv880). Its a rompler, but with a VA feeling in the sounds.

Visconti states in this interview with Roland: "I first bought a Jupiter-8 in the ‘70s: I still have it and it still works fantastically well. My oldest son, Morgan, started playing on that thing when he was about ten. It’s been in the family for years and it still gets used on recordings. Since then, I’ve had most of the Roland keyboards and modules like the XP-80, Fantom, JV-1080, XV-5080 and even the M-GS64. Back in the ’80s, I was programming with the MC-4 for The Moody Blues and others."
