Amazing Soldano preamp pedal in a box, BUT...be sure to dime the treble and presence if used as a standalone preamp!
As a Synergy SYN-2 user I wanted to try and see if I could integrate a preamp pedal into the SYN-2's insert loop as a 5th channel, something that will complement my Friedman HBE for high-gain tones.
Enter the Soldano SLO pedal. This is pretty much the Soldano sound in a preamp package, comes with the standard amp controls along with a deep switch on the side. What I really love about the Soldano SLO is that thanks to the Presence control, you have another layer of high-end frequency control on top of the Treble controls. This is a godsend as a preamp pedal, mainly because since a lot of the preamp pedals are actually designed to go in front of a clean amp, the added presence control allows the guitarist to have more control on the high-end frequencies should they choose to use it as a standalone preamp pedal, just like what I'm doing.
Having said that, I'm not a big fan of the Deep knob on the side. Sure, if you're using single-coil pickups, it can be a godsend; however, for humbucker users, I don't recommend using it - it'll push the low-end too hard to the point where palm mutes start to fart out like crazy, even with the Fortin 33 shelving the low-end frequencies going into the preamp pedal. If you like the Deep switch, then great. Otherwise, use that switch with caution.
I can't attest to how accurate the SLO preamp pedal sounds compared to the real deal; however, it is very dark-sounding on its own. If you plan on using this in front of a clean amp, sure, you can dial back the treble and presence knobs; however, when used as a standalone preamp pedal, the treble frequencies need help, so I would actually start by diming the treble and presence knobs before I start tweaking anything further. If you're recording direct I also recommend avoiding any cab IR's that are dark-sounding - have preference to cab IR's that are bright-sounding, such as the Ownhammer Friedman cab IR or the ML Sound Lab Zilla cab IR.
Overall, a solid 4 stars out of 5. It's a great-sounding preamp pedal, and I would definitely blend the sound with the Friedman HBE's sound for a massive prog power metal tone; however, if you plan to secure this, max out the treble and presence knobs first, THEN tweak your guitar tone from there.
