Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Solid State Logic SSL 2.

Features and functionality

  • The SSL 2+ offers an extra headphone output and about 7dB more gain in its preamps compared to some competitors, which can be crucial for certain setups.

    Source
  • The SSL 2 MKII features hardware loopback, which may reduce CPU usage on older PCs compared to the software loopback of the original version.

    Source
  • The headphone output on the SSL 2 MKII has been noted as significantly improved over the original version.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users indicate that while the SSL 2+ offers a sound improvement over entry-level interfaces like the Steinberg UR22, it may not rival higher-end models like the Apollo Twin.

    Source
  • The Audient iD14 MK2 is favored by some for its potential to expand with ADAT preamps, offering more flexibility for future needs compared to the SSL 2+.

    Source
  • Some users find the SSL 2 MKII to have a slightly brighter sound compared to the original version, adding a subtle sweetness to the audio output.

    Source
  • The original SSL 2 reportedly has better preamp noise performance and a higher maximum mic input gain than the MKII, despite the latter's advertised improvements.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report the SSL 2+ can drive high-impedance headphones like the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohms much louder than the Focusrite 2i2, enhancing the listening experience.

    Source
  • Some users note frustration with all inputs being located on the back of the SSL 2+, potentially complicating cable management in certain workspaces.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The free SSL 2+ software, including a vocal strip plugin, mirrors the sound quality of more CPU-intensive options like Slate VMR, optimizing performance on less powerful systems.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The MKII's improved dynamic range, while not affecting room noise, enhances internal noise performance and provides more gain above the noise level.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's noted that the impedance of the line level input is switchable with the Hi-Z button, which is particularly beneficial for guitar inputs.

Critic Reviews

SSL 2 and 2+ | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Solid State Logic’s SSL 2 and 2+ audio interfaces deliver a remarkable mix of pro features and affordability, making them standout options for entry-level studios. The build quality is solid, and the monitoring sound rivals pricier competitors, offering clarity and detail. The intriguing "Legacy 4K" button adds a subtle enhancement, although it may not transform your recordings into rock anthems. However, the RCA outputs on the 2+ may not appeal to everyone. While SSL enters a crowded market, it successfully infuses its reputation into these interfaces, making them great choices for both beginners and experienced users seeking portability. Overall, the SSL 2 series impresses, but some might find it not groundbreaking enough.

clean and clear, lots of gain on tap

usb class compliant, hardware based direct monitoring = linux friendly! dont know if it has software i dont need it. tone is just loud and clear - the SSL tone. not tubey, but not clinical either. just loud, clean, and clear. i love it. cant find anything i think would be better for solo acoustic fingerstyle atm. im happy with it.

Very good for acoustic fingerstyle stereo recordings

Does direct monitoring, 2 xlrs with their own phantom power switches. light input gain monitors, main speaker monitor knob goes to 11! good sound quality, feels like a real studio unit. i love it! only gave 4 stars because the black switches are hard to tell if they are engaged or not, there is no light just a hair difference in height between engaged or not. other than that i love it.

Absolutely fantastic audio interface!

I bought this to replace my UA Apollo Twin Duo, which despite being a great audio interface, I wasn't very impressed with the headphone amp.

The SSL 2 has amazing monitor outputs and headphone amp! It really drives my Sennheiser HD 600 headphones exactly as they should be.

I also find it's simplicity a great advantage when recording with a guitar/bass on my lap. Need to adjust the monitor mix? Sure the dial is right there on the device! With the UA Apollo you'd end up fiddling around with the mouse and control software, not exactly ideal when you need to record.

The inputs sound great, so far I've tried them on my Bass and Arturia MicroBrute.

Hoping to get hold of an SSL 2+ one day soon, it's hardly surprising they're sold out everywhere!

Smokes my more expensive gear

I've tried a fair share of audio recording stuff through my life (M-box, UA Apollo Twin, Apogee Duet, Apogee Rosetta and Symphony) and this thing is 98% the same and it's just $200 bucks. Plus, it comes with free plug ins.

Great interface

I havent used this very long, as i replaced my scarlett 2i2 with this, though so far its great. Painless installation through windows, great sound, inputs & features. Also for this price, its a deal!

...related to my previous post: The SSL-2 interface that i use for the Sessions has a volume control that goes to 11. So, not only does it sound amazing, it was manufactured by a company with a sense of humour. Thanks to @thatstudioguy for getting me one of these early on. Highly recommended to anyone who is looking for a brilliant piece of kit to base a recording space around. @solidstatelogic 🇬🇧

...i now have 3 of these things. One for IG. One for @thesmokingtire Sessions. And this new one is for the Sessions @theaudiosalon - thanks to @thatstudioguy & @sslaudio for getting it out to me. I ain’t kidding...there is nothing at this price-point, or for a few above it, that can beat it sonically. A brilliant piece of kit. And, yes, i paid for it...and, yes, it DOES go to 11. See u at the next show. ✌🏻
