Critic Reviews

Apogee One (for iPad & Mac) Review | PCMag

pcmag.com

The Apogee ONE is a versatile and high-quality audio interface ideal for Mac and iOS users craving excellent sound. Its built-in condenser mic and battery power make it a convenient choice for mobile recording, while its die-cast aluminum design promises durability. However, its lack of PC compatibility and single 3.5mm output requiring cable swapping could be deal-breakers for some. For those seeking premium sound without breaking the bank, the Apogee ONE stands out as a solid option, though it falls short of the features offered by pricier models like the Apogee Duet.

Apogee One for iPad, iPhone and Mac Review

kenrockwell.com

The Apogee ONE is a standout portable DAC and headphone amp for iPad, iPhone, and Mac, praised for its robust build and exceptional sound quality. Its all-metal design and ease of use make it a top choice for professional musicians in the field. The device offers superb audio performance with a powerful, dynamic range, and a user-friendly volume control. However, it is limited to professional use with Apple devices only and lacks multiple input channels, making it less versatile for those needing stereo recording or compatibility with Windows and Android. Despite these drawbacks, it remains a compelling option for high-impedance headphones at a reasonable price.

Portable and versatile

I bought this for a mobile, globe-trotting studio, mostly because of its flexibility - it offers high quality D/A conversion while integrating a surprisingly usable 96K microphone. It's lightweight nature lends to travel, with detachable dongle that makes sense in a portable setting - if you don't need to use it, leave it in a bag at home, saving further weight. My issues with it have been reliability - I bought it second hand with several cables, including replacements from the supplier. During a public live event / online broadcast while launching my new book, the device failed and the music shut off. Several times during recording it's similarly shut down - but now I suspect it might be an issue with a particular USB port on my computer. I will update this in a few months if the problem persists - or improves.

The more I use it the more the One grows on me, but the reliability issue worries me about relying on Apogee products on the road. If anything I'd love to see the next generation model - the Two? - with 192K sampling and proper 1/4" audio outs, which is possible with the dongle setup.

Portable Interface

The converter sounds good enough with a built in condenser mic that's useful on the go.

In an interview about how Paul Banks writes and records music for his solo material, he mentions using an Apogee ONE USB guitar interface to get his guitar riffs into Logic Pro.

"If I write a guitar line, then I also have an Apogee One, so I can input my guitar into my laptop through that interface. It also has a really good microphone. So I just have a bass guitar and a regular guitar in my hotel room every day, and I would just get Logic-ed up instead of getting liquored up."
