Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Boss FZ-1W Fuzz Waza Craft.

Comparisons

  • When compared to the FZ-5, the FZ-1W can achieve splatty Electric Wizard-like tones when pushed by an overdrive, though it lacks the octave up feature of the FZ-5.

    Source
  • Compared to a Tone Bender, the FZ-1W may not achieve the intricate harmonic balance needed for classic shoegaze tones.

    Source
  • In a shootout with a Keeley Tone Bender, Fuzz Face Mini, Hoof, and Special Cranker, the FZ-1W was favored, especially when paired with a BD-2 for medium gain.

    Source
  • It's noted that this pedal is not for those seeking extreme fuzz character like gated or octave fuzzes; rather, it offers a smoother, more versatile fuzz experience.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners find the FZ-1W's tone bender circuit capable of shoegaze sounds, but it requires careful adjustment of the tone and gain settings.

    Source
  • Owners highlight the pedal's low self-noise, making it stand out as unusually quiet for a fuzz pedal.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • It's noted that the pedal's tone can sound metal/grungy, which some find unsuitable for the warm, layered sound required for shoegaze.

    Source
  • The FZ-1W offers a Vintage mode that excels with single coils, providing a clear fuzz without becoming muddy.

    Source
  • The custom mode boosts mids, aiding in cutting through band mixes better, though some feel it still lacks sufficient volume.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The FZ-1W is often perceived as more suitable for doom or sludge genres than shoegaze, due to its monotone and flat sound characteristics.

    Source
  • The FZ-1W is praised for its versatility, achieving tones from Big Muff silicon fuzz to vintage fuzz, suitable for riffing and as a booster during leads.

    Source
  • Using the FZ-1W as a second gain stage thickens tones, adding girth and body, especially effective when paired with an overdrive pedal for a creamy, violin-like fuzz.

    Source
  • It performs well with both guitars and bass, though some users found it more distortion-like than traditional fuzz.

    Source
  • The pedal shines in classic rock contexts and is great for solos due to its smooth sustain and ability to clean up with volume adjustments.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Initially overlooked due to its $199 price tag, some owners now consider it well worth the price, with others finding deals as low as $139.

    Source
  • While some find the Waza Craft badge doesn't add much value, others appreciate the all-analog, Japan-made build.

    Source

Build quality

  • The pedal features a reliable buffer enhancing clarity and oomph in subsequent pedals, contributing to its premium build quality and aesthetic appeal.

Boss FZ-1W Waza Craft Fuzz Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

Boss's FZ-1W Fuzz Waza Craft delivers a compelling blend of vintage character and modern versatility. With rich, growling tones that evoke classic fuzz pedals, it offers an impressive range of sounds that adapt well to various musical styles. The effective tone control and robust build quality enhance its appeal. However, its price tag of $199 may deter some, especially when compared to more affordable options. Overall, the FZ-1W stands out for players seeking depth and flexibility in their fuzz sound, making it a worthy investment for fuzz enthusiasts.

Boss FZ-1W Fuzz review: a new addition to the Boss fuzz family with no shortage of attitude

guitar.com

The Boss FZ-1W Fuzz Waza Craft dazzles with its innovative analog design and versatile modes, delivering an impressive array of thick, buttery fuzz tones. While its vintage mode leans more towards overdrive than classic fuzz, it provides a warm, midrange-rich sound perfect for many styles. However, the pedal can struggle with sustained chords, leading to some crackly decay. The modern mode pushes these tones further, enhancing midrange presence but may challenge players seeking smooth cleanup with volume adjustments. The tone control is notably effective, yet the awkward mode switch placement can frustrate users. Overall, this is a well-engineered pedal that stands out in the fuzz landscape, but it may not cater to every player's needs.

positive

Boss Waza Craft FZ-1W Vintage Fuzz

soundonsound.com

The Boss FZ-1W Fuzz Waza Craft delivers a versatile fuzz experience, effectively bridging vintage warmth and modern reliability. Its analog circuitry excels in recreating classic sounds while offering superior noise control and a clean response when adjusting settings. The Vintage and Modern modes cater to varied tonal preferences, making it a flexible choice for many genres. However, purists might find it lacks the unpredictable character of older fuzz units. Still, for those seeking consistent performance without sacrificing tone, the FZ-1W stands out as a compelling option for today's musicians.

Divine texture

A must to have fuzz pedal, ideal to recreate that 60's and 70's legendary tones, dark, crunchy, very dinamic, i use personally to make shoegaze textures and stoner riffs with the custom mode (also works with bluesy solos)

Preferred Settings + Usage:

I always choose the tone to the left, i'm love with the dark tones.
