Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Danelectro Back Talk Reverse Delay.

Features and functionality

  • The original Back Talk offers a greater range of delay times and a perceived warmth and grit compared to the reissue, which sounds more clinical.

    Source
  • The original design's circuit coding was reportedly lost, leading to differences in sound and functionality between the original and reissue versions.

    Source
  • Owners mention the Back Talk's lack of delay trails when turned off, which differs from some other delay pedals like the Boss DD series.

    Source
  • The Back Talk exhibits unique glitch effects when changing delay rates and times, a characteristic not noted in other delay pedals like the DD-8.

    Source
  • The reissue is praised for its clean, pristine sound and ease of dialing in a single repeat without the clicking sound present in the original.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Red Panda Tensor is considered superior for reverse delay effects compared to the Back Talk reissue but is just edged out by the original for its analog quirks.

    Source
  • The Boss DD8 reverse delay is seen as equally effective, with the Danelectro offering a tape delay-like hint of modulation, while the DD8 provides a crisp digital sound.

    Source
  • The Boss DD-8 reverse delay is capable of a full-wet signal, a feature some seek exclusively for a seamless reverse effect, unlike the Back Talk.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Running the Back Talk into a regular delay can keep the reverse effect under control, providing a more balanced sound.

    Source
  • Some users prefer the Back Talk for experimental or recording purposes due to its distinctive sound when adjusting delay parameters, rather than regular performance use.

    Source
  • The original Back Talk was used to create a psychedelic washout effect with long delay settings, a feature some users miss in the reissue.

    Source

Build quality

  • The original Back Talk is noted for being both massive and heavy, which can affect its practicality for pedalboard setups.

    Source
  • The reissue's casing is described as surprisingly tall, differing from the preferred design of the original model.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users report noise issues with the reissue version when disengaged, potentially related to switch problems.

    Source
  • Users who own both the Back Talk and Boss DM-2W find the combination fulfilling for various delay needs, with the DM-2W favored for its analog warmth.

    Source
  • The original Back Talk provided a subtle reverse slapback effect, adding thickness to the sound, which some users find lacking in the reissue.

Danelectro Back Talk Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Danelectro Back Talk Reverse Delay reissue is a modern homage to the retro charm of reverse-tape textures, capturing the essence of 1960s psychedelia. It's praised for its convincing, seamless integration with dry signals, offering authentic reverse-tape effects especially at all-wet mix levels. The pedal is intuitive and fun, allowing users to explore creative soundscapes with ease. However, it does have minor drawbacks, such as faint digital artifacts at fast-repeat and high-mix settings. Overall, it's a solid choice for those seeking unique, vintage-inspired delay effects.

Danelectro Back Talk Reverse Delay review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Danelectro Back Talk Reverse Delay is a niche yet delightful pedal for those who appreciate reverse delay effects. It stands out with its warm, musical tone and a mix knob that offers a broad range of ambient shaping. While it does require dedicated pedalboard space, its old-school setup and unique sound make it worthwhile for enthusiasts. Its reissue taps into the rising demand for vintage pedals with a distinct character, offering more warmth than many multi-delay alternatives. Overall, it's a fun addition for guitarists seeking a psychedelic sonic experience.

The Best!

This is the best reverse delay unit out there. Period.

From Gear Setup
jack_devlin

Good pedal, lo-fi and a bit snippy sounding - not for a perfect reverse, but an interesting sound.

Not bad, haven't got a lot to compare it to in my short experience pedal boarding. Slightly snippy in its cuts for where it chooses to reverse, but an interesting function to have a pedal take snippets at a timed interval and send them backwards. Also a super lovely art design.

J

Love this pedal.

It's too broken to play live but boy it sounds great in the studio.
