Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fairfield Circuitry Barber Shop.

Features and functionality

  • The V2 sag knob may differ, lacking the semi-octave effect found in the V1, potentially altering its utility for achieving specific tones.

    Source
  • The Sag knob adjusts the pedal's power supply, mimicking a partially drained 9V battery, creating a 'brown' sound similar to an amp on the edge of breakup.

    Source
  • Fully clockwise Sag delivers the full 9 volts, acting as a clean boost with low drive; lower Sag settings emulate a small combo amp's low-end breakup.

    Source
  • Described as changing bias voltage on JFETs and transistors, the Sag knob influences the pedal's clipping symmetry, affecting distortion character.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Barbershop OD provides sweet, transparent low-gain overdrive, comparable to an OCD but with less gain and a 3-position tonal switch, unlike the brighter BD-2.

    Source
  • The EAE Halberd is highly recommended for stacking, providing a complementary tone to the Barbershop.

    Source
  • A Colorsound Overdriver style pedal, like the Blammo Voltage Driver, stacks well with the Barbershop for enhanced tonal depth.

    Source
  • Some users feel the Barbershop has a distinctive "murky" tone, contrary to the "transparent" description, offering a unique Fairfield sound quality.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • When used with a Strat and Lace Sensor Gold pickups, it works well as a boost, transforming an anemic signal into a lively, edgy tone.

    Source
  • Stacking two Barbershops in series can achieve unique fuzz tones, as demonstrated in Andy Shauf's "The Magician" with varied Sag settings.

    Source
  • The Barbershop excels in delivering transparent breakup and saturation, particularly with amps that have desirable inherent characteristics.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report that the pedal adds low mids without the typical compression, enhancing dynamics and making play more exciting and responsive.

    Source
  • Players find the Barbershop highly responsive to pick attack and input stacking, allowing dynamic changes from clean boost to overdrive with volume pedal manipulation.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • A boost pedal, like the EQD Arrows or MXR Mini Booster, effectively enhances the Barbershop's gain, adding saturation and grit.

    Source
  • Using an EQ pedal with gain, such as the Boss GE7, after the Barbershop adds tonal flexibility and can integrate compression for a varied overdrive effect.

Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Overdrive Review – daft paragon

daftparagon.com

The Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop Overdrive is a pure, transparent pedal that integrates seamlessly with your amp, like the ideal pre-gain knob. It maintains your amp's tone without adding unnecessary coloration or high-frequency boosts, making it perfect for purists who love their amp's sound. The Sag control offers dynamic changes, allowing for both clean and gritty tones. While lacking an EQ knob might deter some, its simplicity is its strength, offering an effective "more" button for your existing setup. Crafted with care using matched JFETs, it's a reliable addition for tone enthusiasts seeking subtle enhancement.

pedal-of-the-day.com

Fairfield Circuitry's Barbershop Overdrive impresses with its simplistic yet effective three-knob design, offering versatile tones from a subtle boost to a gritty overdrive. The unique "Sag" control allows for dynamic voltage adjustments, making it sensitive to your playing style. While the version reviewed lacks the newer model's tone switch, it still delivers bright, clear tones that let your amp sing. A solid choice for those seeking responsive and versatile overdrive at a reasonable price.

High Quality boutique OD

Great Over Drive and light distortion and reasonable levels. If you run the gain and dirt knob together you can get it pretty angry. It has a classy boost/drive tone. Very user friendly when you dial it in.

We used a lot of Echoplex tape delay, that’s one of my all-time favourite effects. I used a Russian Big Muff, Earthquaker Devices Tone Reapers… the Fairfield Circuitry drive pedal is like a Neil Young kind of saggy, amp on the verge of blowing up sound, with a starve control. For some of the soundscape-type stuff, I use a Line 6 M9 because of all the looping features, so I can forward, reverse, half-speed and double-time loops.
