Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fairfield Circuitry The Barbershop Millenium Overdrive.

Use cases and applications

  • The Barbershop is versatile for transparent breakup and saturation, working well with classic amps like the Fender '65 Twin Reverb or Deluxe Reissue for vintage tones.

    Source
  • The pedal can mimic "low wattage" amp sounds on mid- to high-wattage amps when using the SAG control to starve voltage around 8V.

    Source
  • Pairing the Barbershop with an Andy Shauf-style setup involves using two pedals in series with differing Sag settings for a unique fuzz tone, akin to tracks like “The Magician.”

    Source
  • It excels when used as a boost into drive pedals, imparting a tweed-like character and saturation, though it lacks compression which affects play feel.

    Source

User experience

  • The Barbershop is often described as an "always-on" pedal, subtly enhancing clean tones and working well with various fuzzes.

    Source
  • After initial skepticism about the new design, users found the updated Barbershop's sound quality exceeded expectations, highlighting its natural, rich tone.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the low noise levels, noting it as one of the quietest drive pedals they've encountered, enhancing the playing experience.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer the Barbershop's overdrive over Klon-style pedals for its transparency without sounding artificial.

    Source
  • A Blues Breaker circuit or a Benson Preamp after the Barbershop provides additional tonal options, expanding its versatility beyond typical overdrive uses.

    Source
  • The EAE Halberd is identified as a favorable match with the Barbershop, providing complementary tonal characteristics when stacked together.

    Source
  • The Barbershop's sound is likened to a sweet, transparent low-gain overdrive, somewhat comparable to the OCD but with less gain and a three-position tonal switch.

    Source
  • The pedal is compared to the EQD Westwoods for having a gritty, trebly OD that reacts differently to pick attack, providing more versatility than the Westwoods.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Drive knob offers colorful, harmonically rich overdrive, with a sensitive sweep past 12 o'clock providing varied distortion levels.

    Source
  • The updated version includes a Tone knob for high-end cut, enhancing control over treble-heavy guitars or creating experimental sounds.

    Source
  • It's noted that the sag control is ineffective below noon, as the signal drops out after a second of sustain, lacking a musical quality.

    Source
  • The Barbershop is praised for its ability to enhance low-gain tones, adding character and grit without overwhelming the amp's natural qualities, especially when using a Jaguar or Tele pickup setup.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • MXR Sugar Drive, which combines Klon and Tube Screamer elements, is recommended for stacking, enhancing the Barbershop's capabilities both before and after in the chain.

    Source
  • Integrating an EQD Arrows boost before the Barbershop can effectively goose its gain, offering a different sound dimension when paired with amps like Vox AC10 or Benson Nathan Junior.

Wanted to check out Fairfield's stuff for a while now, could not have been happier to see this come up on Craigslist.

Fairly clean if you want it to be, but it really shines when you let some of its character come through. Ended up at the end of the chain because it takes a bunch of delay/verb/gain without getting muddy, and the 3-way tone cut makes it easy to switch guitars or amps without worrying about a knob position.

The overall EQ & shape of the grit lend nicely to a jangly, broken Fender sound (Women, Omni etc), especially with the Sag knob rolled back.
