Features and functionality

Value and pricing

  • A user who paid $140 considers it a reasonable practice amp, especially given its undeservedly negative reputation.

Critic Reviews

Late 1980s Fender Champ 12 Amplifier | Planet Botch

planetbotch.blogspot.com

The Fender Champ 12 from the late '80s offers a mixed bag. While it shines as a practice amp with a decent clean tone, its overdrive disappoints, sounding boxy and lacking depth. The built-in reverb is underwhelming, leaving much to be desired in terms of spaciousness. Though compact and visually appealing, its performance falters at higher volumes, with the speaker struggling to cope. As a relic of the '80s, it might appeal to collectors, but practical players should be cautious, especially considering potential additional costs for upgrades. Overall, the Champ 12 falls short of expectations.

Hot-Rodding A Fender Champ 12 - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Fender Champ 12 offers a vintage vibe with its 12-watt output and classic tube configuration, making it a decent practice amp for lower volume settings. However, the amp's design quirks, such as its problematic gain adjustability and simplistic reverb, leave much to be desired. Modifications can improve tonal fidelity, but the Champ 12 is unlikely to rival the bolder Fender Tonemaster without extensive work. While it's a fun amp to tinker with, players should be prepared for some DIY efforts to unlock its full potential.

Excellent

I play punk, grunge, early 90's rock. Bought this amp second hand because it's compact with a 12 inch speaker and just the basic knobs I need. The overdrive tone is awesome, very dirty sounding. The reverb sounds sweet too. The reason I'm giving 4 starts is because it would be nice to have a gain knob for the clean channel to get a little more crunch, and the minimum volume setting for the overdrive is pretty loud, too loud for frequent home practice. I recommend this amp for band practices, small gigs. It has never let me down. I often get remarks of how good it sounds.

Small, light, good blues tone

I practice with one of these a lot and just plug straight in. The overdrive is great for a heavy blues sound. Mike it up if you're gigging with it.

Favourite amp

This was my dads amp but is now mine. When ever I need to do anything I always go straight to my good old Fender Champ 12. This amp is perfect for any small gig or practice at home, even without an effects loop this amp has served me well. Producing a full warm well bodied sound that is always pleasing to my ears!

Great little amp

Friend had one and love playing on it. Great tone for bluesy playing so I bought one. Then quit playing blues and classic rock but keep it around when the mood strikes me.
