The Gibson ES-355 was the Cadillac of Classic Thinline Semis | GuitarPlayer

guitarplayer.com

The Gibson ES-355 is lauded as the "Cadillac of classic thinline semis," impressing with its ornate design and customization options. Known for its rich history since 1958, it features luxurious elements like ebony boards and real mother-of-pearl inlays, along with gold hardware. Its stereo and mono versions are highly desirable, particularly the stoptail models praised for better sustain and cleaner string bending. While the transition to nylon saddles in the '60s may divide opinions, they are noted to complement the guitar's sound. Overall, this article paints the ES-355 as a high-end, customizable instrument cherished by collectors and players alike.

Grace and versatility.

An instrument that can define the sounds of artists as far apart as BB King, Johnny Marr, Ryan Adams, Noel Gallagher and Keith Richards has to be a classic tone machine. An artists’ staple for over half a century, this upscale 335 is at home across genres from Jazz to country. Is it worth the extra dish for better bindings, inlays and varitone? Only if you own one.

1996 Gibson ES-335

I wanted a Gibson since I was a kid and learned that my favourites had them. I got the train to and from Dundee in Scotland to buy mine off a postman in a 14 hour round trip. In recording, I use it to play open chords all the way through a song, through a Vox AD100VT, to balance the brightness of my Strat and the growl of my Z. I love it.

In this Vintage Guitar Magazine article, Robben Ford says this about his 1963 Gibson ES-355: "I also have a ’63 355, but a 335 has a bigger tone. It’s a better-sounding guitar. A 355 is very specific and has that honky, midrangey thing. Because it’s got all that hardware and machinery in it, the guitar isn’t able to resonate like a 335 – at least that’s what I would say. I fell in love with the 355 just visually, when I was 12 years old, and I always wanted one. I finally got one, but the only place I was ever able to use it was when I was out with Phil Lesh. To me, the 355 is the most beautiful-looking electric guitar ever made."
