Highly personalised, both electrically and aesthetically
The overall ability and strength in depth of Gibson's Les Paul guitar leaves little requirement for modification, although in this instance I opted for a series of "upgrades" which were chosen with the intention if widening the instrument's inherent wide ranging capabilities... . I replaced Gibson's standard humbuckers with a pair of Bare Knucle Pickups' "Painkillers" which added more crispness and attack, especially higher up the scale, to the guitar's already superb tonal range. . I installed a Kent Armstrong single coil pickup between the humbuckers, which adds a rich, silky midrange to the tone, without unbalancing the overall sound. . A selectable/bypassable, active "Tone shaper" in the form of a "push/pull" enabled potentiometer sized unit affords a very subtle pre-amplifier and selective filtering to boost frequencies from bass, through middle and high, to Bass/Top boost. . All other modifications are purely aesthetic and just pander only to my love of individuality

By 1953, Doc was married and had two children. He started playing in a band with piano player Jack Williams to earn money to support his family. At that time he swapped his D-28 for a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar which he used with the band for the rockabilly style music they performed. Doc was still playing the Les Paul in 1960 when he was discovered by musician-folklorist Ralph Rinzler, who had come to the area looking to record Clarence "Tom" Ashley. It was Ashley who had suggested that Doc play guitar for the recording.

The guitar I’ve been using for years is a 1952 Les Paul. It’s one of the prototypes. Actually I have two of them. Just through blind luck one day all of our gear was on its way to Europe and Neil wanted to rehearse, so he told the guys to dig out some equipment for us. The guy handed me this guitar and it was another gold-top Les Paul prototype, but with a Bigsby on it. So Neil gave it to me and now I have two of them. Neil never used it because it had some problems. Whoever put the Bigsby on it missed by an eighth of an inch, so it was hard to keep in tune and it sounded terrible. But I got that all straightened out. The one I use most, though, is my original, which sounds a little hotter to me.
