Description

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones are the Sennheiser HD 650 repackaged by Massdrop.

If you know audio gear, you know the Sennheiser HD 650. The company’s flagship from 2003 to 2009, this open-back headphone has shown serious staying power. Praised for its richly detailed, effortlessly enjoyable sound, it remains one of the most talked-about products on Head-Fi today—and is still widely considered among the best headphones under $1,000. So when we teamed up with Sennheiser on its first-ever community-driven design partnership, the HD 650 was a natural place to start. A new revision of the popular all-rounder, the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX has that same great sound plus a few updates, and a price that makes it even easier to love.

Refreshed Aesthetic, Improved Utility Crafted with the modern audiophile in mind, the HD 6XX replaces the HD 650’s gray colorway with something darker and more dramatic: a deep midnight blue. The silver nameplates have been swapped for black plates with contrasting silver text—and the Massdrop logo is silk-screened on the inside of the headband, just above the right cup, with the serial number located just above the left cup. Based on feedback from the community, this iteration has also been updated with a detachable 6-foot cable (compared to the original’s 10-foot cable) and a ?-inch plug, which is more versatile for everyday laptop, phone, and DAP use than the standard ¼-inch plug. Of course, the HD 6XX comes with a ¼-inch adapter for those who want it.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX.

Mods and upgrades

  • A balanced 4.4mm cable, such as the Youks model, significantly enhances the HD 6XX sound, reducing microphony and tangling issues often found with other cables.

    Source
  • ZMF pads closely mimic stock sound while offering greater longevity, a worthwhile investment for frequent users.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The HD 6XX, paired with a Moondrop Dawn Pro dongle DAC, provides 75% of the high-end listening experience at a fraction of the price compared to more expensive setups.

    Source
  • The 6XX delivers mids that rival headphones five times its price but lacks the treble and bass extension of DT990.

    Source
  • The HD 650 is noted for a sleeker, more premium finish compared to the 6XX, reminiscent of the HD600's glossy speckled look.

    Source
  • Sound differences between 6XX and 650 may be influenced by pad wear and unit variation, rather than intrinsic design differences.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 300-ohm impedance of the HD 6XX requires a suitable amplifier for optimal sound quality, with an OTL tube amp offering a notably magical auditory experience.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report that the HD 6XX has remained a relevant and outstanding audiophile headphone for decades, praised for its sound profile and longevity in the market.

    Source
  • Some users find the clamping force initially high but note it loosens to comfortable levels within a day.

    Source
  • Some owners prefer the longer 3m 1/4 inch cable included with the HD 650, which isn't standard with the 6XX.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some users find the stock pads wear quickly; consider ZMF velour pads for durability and similar sound quality.

    Source
  • The plastic on the headband can be prone to snapping during replacement, indicating a potential fragility in the build.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The HD6XX can often be found for $179 or $169 with discounts, making it a strong value for midrange enthusiasts.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Best suited for vocal-focused music and genres with slower tempos; less effective for fast-paced rock or bass-heavy EDM.

    Source

Other

  • Owners discuss replacing foam behind the driver, noting that the 650 uses two pieces while the 6XX uses one thick piece, which may affect sound slightly.

Sennheiser HD 6XX Review - RTINGS.com

rtings.com

The Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones offer a superbly neutral and balanced sound, ideal for audiophiles seeking clarity and detail. Their open-back design delivers an immersive soundstage, but sacrifices portability and noise isolation, making them unsuitable for travel or office environments. While they're well-built and comfortable for casual listening, the lack of bass punch might leave bass lovers wanting. Overall, a fantastic choice for studio use, but not the best for everyday on-the-go listening.

Drop x Sennheiser HD 6XX review: Basically an HD 650 - SoundGuys

soundguys.com

The Drop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones deliver exceptional audio quality at a fraction of the price of the legendary HD 650, making them a fantastic choice for budget-conscious audiophiles. They excel in sound performance with a neutral-leaning, studio-like response, offering clear and balanced audio. However, they require an amp for optimal volume due to their 300Ω impedance, and their open-back design lacks noise isolation, limiting their use to quiet environments. These headphones are best suited for home use by a computer or home theater setup. Despite minor drawbacks, the HD 6XX stands out as a top-notch affordable option for at-home listening.

Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones review | TechRadar

techradar.com

The Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones offer an affordable route to audiophile-grade sound with their exceptional clarity and well-balanced audio profile. While they excel in delivering detailed sound, they fall short with a middling soundstage and a somewhat excessive clamping force. Additionally, the plastic construction and cabling might deter longevity. Despite these drawbacks, they remain a compelling choice for those venturing into high-quality audio, providing a significant upgrade over typical closed-back headphones without breaking the bank. Ideal for home use with a dedicated amp, but less versatile for on-the-go listening.
