Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about MXR DC Brick™ Power Supply – M237.

Features and functionality

  • The MXR DC Brick is essentially a daisy chain in a metal box, lacking isolated outputs, which can lead to noise issues when combining digital and analog pedals.

    Source
  • Chaining two MXR DC Bricks is possible, but the second unit's output is constrained by the first brick's 18V output, estimated conservatively at around 800 mA 9V.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users report that the screenprint on the variable voltage ports is incorrect; setting it to 9V actually outputs 10V.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Many recommend the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus or Cioks DC7 over the MXR DC Brick for truly isolated power and reduced noise.

    Source
  • The Mini Iso Brick is suggested as a slightly more expensive alternative that offers better functionality than chaining two DC Bricks, providing isolated outputs.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The DC Brick works for hobbyists or bedroom players, but touring musicians often experience noise issues, especially with mixed pedal setups.

    Source
  • Chaining two MXR DC Bricks can power several analog pedals or a few digital ones, but this setup may not be optimal for complex pedalboards.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners report the DC Brick failing quickly, with issues like short circuits and broken power cables within months of use.

MXR DC Brick Power Supply Review: Does It Deserve a Spot on Your Board? - Produce Like A Pro

producelikeapro.com

The MXR DC Brick Power Supply is a dependable entry-level option for pedal enthusiasts. It offers eight 9V and two 18V outputs, housed in a rugged, compact design perfect for small to mid-sized boards. While it isn't isolated, which might lead to some noise in high-gain setups, it remains impressively quiet under general use. Its affordability and reliability make it an excellent choice for beginners and casual players, though gigging musicians might prefer the noise immunity of the pricier ISO-Brick variant. Overall, a solid, no-fuss power solution from MXR.

Meh

It's story and reliable, but it's not isolated. It really doesn't make as much of a difference as everyone says.

With some of the cheaper $30 Donner power supplies you can forgive it, but if you're going to spend $100 on a power supply you might as well spend $25 more and get something isolated that you can keep forever.

asouthiseng1

can't say anything negative about it!

I just wish it had more 9V outputs but that's me being overly nitpicky. there is nothing bad I can say about this power supply except for the fact that it is not an isolated supply. the MXR Iso-Brick is an isolated power supply, the DC Brick is not, meaning there will be a hum at the highest volumes. but if you're at the point of being in a band that you're playing shows that require you to be loud enough to overwork this power supply, then you more than likely have enough money to upgrade to another power supply. so, once again, nothing bad can be said about the DC Brick.

Good

Does it's thing. Lightweight, small foot print. Will fit underneath a small pedalboard. No tonesuck.

Does the trick with no tone-suck

Just got this and haven't played much yet, but it powers my pedals with no problems and doesn't seem to contribute any tone-suck problems. Well-built, and smaller than I expected. Happy so far! MXR/Dunlop stuff always seems solid. Mainly got it because I've had a cheap powered pedal board for a long time that has taken up a lot of space and had a lot of features I never use (terrible built in speaker??), and when I decided I wanted to get my pedals up off the floor so they're more within reach I needed a new way to power them.

Works Perfectly

Perfect solution. Does exactly what it’s supposed to. Solid MXR quality construction, and consistent.

Ideal for small pedalboard

Loved this power supply! 8x 9V plus 2x 18V make it ideal for a small pedalboard, providing you do not have pedals that require more than 100mA. A single (older) digital pedal will still work but it cannot provide enough power for a Strymon pedal

Super small super light

Got it like a month ago and it seems to work just fine. I haven't noticed any increase in the hum powering my 7 pedals with it, but the best things about it sure are its size and weight...It's way smaller and lighter than most of my pedals! Recommend it

ianlime

Perfect for it's side, very useful LEDs lights.

I'd say this is one of the most reliable, solid pedals I have. It has 8 9V and 2 18V outs, which at least for me it's plenty. The thing with the LEDs is pretty great. I had a problem once when a pedal was failing the sound for a couple of days and then one day after I moved my pedal board it just stopped working. I noticed that a LED on the brick lit red. I took a look at it and found out that after I moved the board a power cord between the brick and the pedal was almost broken. It never happened onstage but it's a pretty great advantage to have this warning before you play. If you plug your board and see a red light there you can work on it before it fails your song in the middle of the gig. Cheers

brandon_bolderoff

chord too short.

no problems with power your effect pedals. just the cable to power the mxr dc brick is too small. it's one of those power chord with a big block at the end of it, which is annoying for live/home use. positive note: when i used a 1 spot with my mxr bass octave deluxe and mxr bass fuzz deluxe, they made a terrible noise. the mxr dc brick eliminated that noise.

lawlietaya

Have one of these to keep all of my pedals powered (duh). It's pretty good and I've heard people whine about hum but I've never had that problem myself. Great piece of gear, and great value for money.
