Roland JX-3P Synthesizer Delight – Jim Atwood in Japan

wordpress.com

The Roland JX-3P is hailed as a delightful retro synthesizer with a standout sequencer that rivals an arpeggiator, offering versatility in creating 80s-style grooves. Its lightweight build and vibrant design add to its charm, while the PG-200 programmer enhances its usability. Although the lack of an arpeggiator might deter some, the sequencer's functionality compensates effectively. The JX-3P is praised for its solid performance and fun factor, and it's recommended over the MKS-30 and Juno-106 for its reliability and musical potential. It's a must-have for analog synth enthusiasts seeking a blend of nostalgia and creativity.

Roland JX-3P | Vintage Synth Explorer

vintagesynth.com

The Roland JX-3P is a vintage synth gem that offers classic analog sounds with a unique blend of digital control. Its robust sound engine, featuring dual oscillators per voice, provides flexibility beyond the JUNO series. While its programming interface is less intuitive without the optional PG-200 programmer, it compensates with stable Roland tones and MIDI capability, albeit limited. Despite its lower popularity compared to the JUNO, the JX-3P's rich sound and affordability make it a worthy contender for those seeking early '80s Roland vibes. Aftermarket upgrades can further enhance its functionality, making it a hidden treasure in the world of vintage synthesis.

Roland JX-3P (EMM Aug 83)

muzines.co.uk

The Roland JX-3P is a testament to affordable polyphonic synthesis, blending analog charm with digital precision. Its standout feature is MIDI capability, setting a new standard for budget-friendly synths. The optional PG-200 programmer enhances sound design, making it indispensable once experienced. Its built-in sequencer, though basic, is a valuable tool for crafting riffs and fills. While the synth's performance controls offer robust sound manipulation, some limitations, like the lack of real-time sequencer play and pitch bender quirks, might deter perfectionists. Overall, the JX-3P offers excellent value, making it a worthy investment for those diving into MIDI and polyphonic synthesis.

The Tale of a Forgotten Classic: The Roland JX-3P

happymag.tv

The Roland JX-3P, a synth overshadowed by its contemporaries, emerges as a forgotten classic worthy of exploration. Its dual DCOs and built-in sequencer offer rich sound and versatility, especially with the PG-200 controller enhancing its user interface. While it was outshone by rivals like the Yamaha DX7 in the '80s, its affordability and unique features make it an attractive option today. Roland's revival through the Boutique series and Cloud soft synths highlights its enduring appeal. For those seeking a capable, underrated gem, the JX-3P is a compelling choice.

Really Beautiful Synth, unfortunately whitout programmer is pretty difficoult to use

Played for a while, a real good machine. It features a couple of good preset analog sounds like organs a beautiful EP and a lot of synth sounds

jordy_kalfsvel

filter resonance not quite punchy

filter resonance not quite punchy enough, to make nice sweeps

pkennethk

Agreed. The 3P's filter resonance can creep into self-oscillation in musically useful ways, but it's nothing like the crazy, "Rollin' & Scratchin'" break-apart chaos that the Juno 6/60, 106, or even SH-101 can achieve at their most extreme settings. The 3P shouldn't be anyone's go-to for ultra-aggressive sounds.

Good!

If you need to program it - just take the kiwi upgrade and kiwi patch-editor and go!)

"I've got two new synths, the Roland JX3P which interfaces best with the GR700, and the Jupiter 6. I'm also trying to get a Yamaha DX7, but you've got to be careful not to collect too much at once, or your life becomes dominated by buttons. The JX3P is coming out in a little rack mounted unit in August without the keyboard and I'm waiting for that as well." The JX-3P was also credited as one of the synthesizers used by both Andy Summers and Robert Fripp on the Bewitched LP, released 1984.
