VOX was founded in 1957 by Tom Jennings through his company Jennings Musical Instruments (JMI), based in Dartford, Kent, England. The brand's sound was defined largely by amp designer Dick Denney, who developed the AC1/15 in 1958—the first amplifier to carry the VOX name. In 1959, the AC30 followed, offering 30 watts through a pair of 12" Celestion speakers to meet the demands of louder stages. The AC30's distinctive chiming tone became synonymous with British rock, used by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and many others during the 1960s.
Alongside amplifiers, VOX built a broader catalog of instruments and accessories that shaped the sound of popular music. The Continental electric organ, recognizable by its reversed black-and-white keyboard design, became a staple of 1960s and 70s pop and rock. The VOX wah-wah pedal, developed in the late 1960s, became one of the most widely used effects in electric guitar history, associated with players including Jimi Hendrix. The original AC15 and AC30 circuits have remained in continuous production in various forms, alongside newer offerings such as the compact Nutube-powered MV50 series and a range of digital modeling and practice amplifiers.
Since 1992, VOX has been owned by the Japanese electronics company Korg, which has continued to develop the brand's product line while preserving its British identity. The AC30 remains a benchmark for players seeking what is often described as a chimey clean-to-crunch tone, and has been associated with artists including Brian May of Queen, U2, Tom Petty, and Radiohead.
