Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb/Delay review on varguitar.com

varguitar.com

The Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb/Delay is a nostalgic trip back to the 90s, offering a unique cold, digital cloudiness in its reverb that's adored by some, but its age shows. While it's charmingly used by bands like Radiohead and The XX, its limitations are stark: only four reverb modes without modern favorites like spring or shimmer, and no stereo inputs. It's a relic that can inspire with its gritty, vast Plate algorithm but feels restrictive compared to modern counterparts. A solid choice for those craving classic vibes, but not for everyone.

The Boss RV-3 Delay Reverb | guitar TONE OVERLOAD

guitartoneoverload.com

The Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb/Delay is both a relic and a gem from the '90s, offering a unique combination of digital delay and reverb in a compact pedal. While it lacks analog warmth and any spring reverb simulation, it excels in delivering pristine, metallic delays and precise reverbs, creating expansive, studio-quality tones. The pedal's versatility, with 11 modes and stereo capabilities, makes it a great find on the second-hand market. However, the inability to separately adjust delay and reverb levels may be a limitation for some. Overall, it's an underrated piece of gear worth considering for those seeking a blend of delay and reverb effects.

Not Perfect

Awesome, but has its flaws. When activated, it has a certain bass boost to it that interferes with my standard sound. Can be countered by a well orchestrated equalizer, but I don't like equalizers on my pedboard. Has really great features that allow for a wide variety of Delay/Reverb mixes. I recommend this pedal, because you save a Boss-size space on your board instead of having both Delay and Reverb.

jimmarchi1

I would guess the bass boost problem would be alleviated by setting the effect 100% wet and putting it in the effects loop if your amp has one... but effects loops are lame so I stay away from reverb....

the_patchman

I agree with you, it is just inconvenient.

This was stolen from me back in 96 and now to have it back is heaven. Sounds amazing with the boss analog delay pedal in front of it.

AWESOME

Nice delays as reverbs options. Smooth decays while turning on/off.

The translated text of this tweet is as follows: "Today, the BD-2 is a Waza! The [Earthquaker] Arrows and the Centaur are already my go-tos. The [Earthquaker] Plumes is cranked! I'm not good at stepping on switches, so I use Providence loop routing boxes. Since I want to step on the CE-2 and the RE-3 at the same time, I use the loop routing boxes. The RE-6 is for those extra long delays!"

On August of 2016, MusicRadar did a Rig Tour with Explosions in the Sky, taking a quick look at their gear. On Mark Smith's board, his signal is first affected by a Boss RV-3.

“It’s been indispensable, and now that I think about it, this exact pedal has lasted me about 15 years without breaking. And we finally bought some backups - so I’m feeling good about that! There are other super nice reverb options these days, but back 15 years ago it seemed far and away the best way to get the most warmth and grandness from the guitar.”

From a Rig Tour by Music Radar with Explosions in the Sky.

“The sound of the RV-3… it’s cloudy enough to mask the digital-ness of it. As the models went along, they just got cleaner and clearer - which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for, but you can also hear the digital sound of that reverb much clearer. Whereas the RV-3 puts this little sheen over everything that makes it sound beautiful and angelic, without sounding really digital.”
