Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about DigiTech WH-5 Whammy V.

Features and functionality

  • The Whammy 5's chords mode is noted for excellent tracking, enabling organ-like ambient sounds with octave-up harmony and volume swells.

    Source
  • The Whammy V is true bypass, eliminating the need for mods required in the IV to achieve this feature.

    Source
  • The classic mode emulates older Whammy models' glitchy tracking, allowing users to recreate vintage effects.

    Source
  • The Whammy DT offers dual pitch shifts (normal and drop tune) for complex sounds, including detune effects resembling a 12-string guitar.

    Source
  • The Major 2nd-down mode is praised for creating faux-tremolo arm effects, reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine sounds without using a tremolo bar.

    Source
  • The Whammy V allows switching between CLASSIC and CHORDS modes, providing flexibility for different pitch intervals.

    Source
  • The DT is always in "CHORDS" mode, offering superior polyphonic handling compared to previous Digitech algorithms, but with some processing latency.

    Source

User experience

  • Users who own both the IV and V models find the Whammy V significantly more effective and enjoyable, highlighting its advancements over previous versions.

    Source
  • Low latency in harmony and drop-tune modes allows tight rhythmic playing, though some pitch artifacts occur when using extreme tuning shifts.

    Source
  • Owners find the DT excels in polyphonic pitch shifting, handling single notes even better due to its advanced algorithm.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Whammy V is noted for having faster tracking than the Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork, though the Pitch Fork has unique features requiring an additional expression pedal.

    Source
  • The Whammy V's pitch-shifting quality is described as nearing Eventide standards, surpassing the original WH-1 and the Whammy IV.

    Source
  • The DT has a Momentary mode not found on the Whammy V, offering unique rhythmic pitch-shifting possibilities.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners note that placing the Whammy V before all distortion/overdrive pedals is crucial for achieving clean pitch shifting, as dirt pedals can interfere with tracking.

    Source
  • Harmony mode can create haunting soundscapes and pedal-tone effects, offering under-utilized potential for creative sound design.

    Source
  • Users prefer the Whammy 5's down-octave mode over the EHX Pog2 for bass emulation due to perceived lower latency.

    Source
  • The DT can simulate extended fretboard range by shifting pitches up to a +5th or down to a -4th, useful for playing beyond the 21st-24th fret range.

usable for any genre

my favorite thing to do is set the pedal to +1 octave on classic mode and kick it on during solos, especially at the end of bluesy phrases. it works very well with other pedals, but i do completely understand the complain of this pedal requiring its own boujee power supply. in fact, because you have to use a specific power supply for this pedal, it has caused me to bring power strip surge protectors with me to every gig i perform or else i can't plug this s.o.b. in. the other complaint i see a lot is that it is not a hands-free pedal if you are looking to change the pedals settings. my response is this: cry about it. you can either change the pedals settings before songs, or during a solo for an artistic effect. this pedal really can do a ton of stuff but the only other feature i frequently use is the "detune" option; it's basically like having a modulation pedal, but with its own sound that's distinct from a chorus, flanger, or phaser. the detuner has a "shallow" and "deep" setting to basically determine how much warble you get. super cool shit.

hidden gem for shoegaze

This pedal is incredible for gliding and dreamy sounds found in shoegaze.

A must for any noise musician.

This is a fundamental part of my rig, I think it really is the best pitch shifter out of any pedals that I've come across. The tracking is pretty much perfect enough for me to create multiple songs off of me shifting the pitch with the foot pedal part of the unit, similar to how wahh pedal players use their wahhs (except these settings are way cooler than any wahh haha).

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Octave up, Octave down, and the Octave up / Octave Down harmony setting

The best pitch shifter

Does exactly what you want and does it well. Solidly built, plenty of options for pitch, and the shallow detune is a great vibrato style effect in it's own right.

Perfect

Best pitch shifter with the classic glitchy pitch sounds. Alongside with reverb and overdrive is the perfect combo

Favourite preset is the harmony oct up/down on classic mode

A must have

Warning ! Having this pedal ≠ play like bellamy. Thought I could play easily all muse songs, you need this pedal to try, but it's very difficult to sound well.

If you don't have chorus pedal, try detune !

Preferred Settings + Usage:

of course +1 or + 2 (tom morello ??) but detune (deep) is very well as-well.

The best so far!

I was looking for this pedal since I listened to Munky and Head crazy riffs back in 99'. The way they create riffs and different atmosphere sounds made me a huge Korn fan. Infinite possibilities, from single-note riffs to change your guitar's tune from DropD to DropC (select "\/ 2nd") or to DropA (select "\/ 4th"), so I don't need to change guitars during jams and concerts. There are so many possibilities that I'm always trying something new with this amazing pedal. I recommend you to spend some time doing the same, and explore all the features from this insane pedal.

miroslav_suvada

Lots of fun

This pedal is just pure fun. Love it or hate it but if you can use it cough cough Tom Morello then you have great tool for experimenting with your sound and enrich your solos, create interesting rhythm sounds (Muse, Radiohead). I use it even for creating music with looper to emulate bass sound which sounds really cool. This pedal can also create iconic digital glitchy sound which is cool for some picking patterns etc. Only limit is your imagination :)

konstantin_musik

Awesome!

I really like the Whammy! As the only guitar player in my Band, the hamonizer gives me many opportunities to expand my sound! The pitch shifter effect gives me the chance to play deeper notes without detuning my guitar. A very useful and fun effect

Best whammy for the bypass alone, but is super versatile

A lot of the previous whammys were notorious for their bad bypassing. This one has true bypassing to fix that problem. Not only that, but the classic/chords setting makes this a crazy versatile pedal. Can get that classic glitchy Whammy sound with one setting, and a polyphonic octaver with the other.
