Critic Reviews

Fender 5E3 Deluxe | Vintage Guitar® magazine

vintageguitar.com

The Fender 'narrow panel tweed' Deluxe Amp 5E3 is hailed for its iconic tone, making it a favorite among blues and rock enthusiasts. Its 15-watt output delivers a warm, saturated sound that's perfect for vintage electric blues, though it can become overly compressed at higher volumes. While its charm lies in its raw, tactile overdrive, some players might crave more headroom and definition. Modifications such as adjusting the rectifier and power filtering can enhance its clarity and punch without sacrificing its classic breakup. Overall, it's a beloved tone machine with room for customization.

Fender 'Tweed' Deluxe: history of the definitive tweed amp | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Fender 'narrow panel tweed' Deluxe Amp 5E3 is celebrated for its iconic rock 'n' roll growl and sweet saturation, making it a favorite among legendary musicians like Neil Young and Don Felder. Its unique tone, partly due to the absence of a negative feedback circuit and the use of a cathodyne phase splitter, delivers a sweet sound at lower volumes, transitioning into rich distortion at higher settings. However, its design might not appeal to modern users seeking more robust features, as it lacks the power and versatility of newer amps. Overall, it's a quintessential vintage amp for those who appreciate classic tones.

The best amp in the world.

Having been an amp nerd for most of my adult life, Ive become convinced that nothing will make more difference to your tone than your choice of amp. As the man says a great guitar thru a bad amp sounds bad. An ok guitar through a great amp sounds amazing!!!

I over load the front end of my signal and drive it hard at the amp. The tube rectifier on the deluxe, grabs it, squeezes it and takes away all the hate in the world and pumps it out as sweet soul searing tone that makes puppies weep and young girls go running for their mom.

Neil young rocks one, the edge has a few and they can still be found cheaper than "boutique" clones. Its a circuit thats been imitated, tweaked and cloned but never been bettered.

I have two of these babies, both with new speakers. The old ones are nearly always clapped out. Ive owned a fifties champ, princeton, vibrolux and tremolux. None of them sound as good as a tweed deluxe. Sell your granny and get one for yourself. You'll never need another amp

love the tweed deluxe and similar 50s Gibsons I have owned.... I particular miss the GA14 I sold last Christmas.... maybe I will treat myself to this wide panel, octal deluxe I know is sitting at a mom and pop store north of Philly unsold for the last 3 years.... yours is a narrow panel with noval preamps? Do you keep the stock 12ay7 in V1 or do you put a hotter variant in there like some folks do?

its just the way it came. i don't mess with them if i like the sound.

Gywn Ashton said to Australian Musician (article published 21 March 2014) "Again, I have a supply of amps – mainly vintage tweeds, depending on the gig size. I like small amps and the louder I can play, the more I bring in. I start off with one or two Fender Pro Juniors, add a 1957 Fender Deluxe, a 1956 Fender Twin Amp 40w or either one, or BOTH, of my high-power Tweed Twins from 1957 and 1959. I have an AC30, too."

A 1957 Fender Deluxe would be a 5E3.
